74 air filter
I'm going to repaint my 1974 small block air filter can, which is the correct paint............flat, gloss or satin? The last owner used gloss and it just doesn't look right, not to mention all the runs!
thanks

I bought a new 74 air cleaner in the late seventies . From the Chevy parts counter . New in the box it was very shiney . Definelty not flat . Sort of between semi gloss and gloss.
New paints don't go on looking the same, because they are same or lacking now non environment friendly components . A can of cheap glossed blk paint doesn't look the same ..... In pictures you'd post on line .....I might never know ....black is black....but walking though a car show , I can tell which are original or ones that have had a very picky restoration process are hard to detect and the poor rattle can jobs.
To get close you'd have to use a close blk sheen though a sprayer and then polish it to the right sheen.

It's neither flat, gloss or satin. It's actually a semi-gloss or low gloss. I got mine powder coated at my local powder coater and he calls it GM 30% Gloss. Amazon also sells the Dupli-color paint
Dupli-Color DE1634 Ceramic GM/Chrysler Low Gloss Black Engine Paint - 12 oz.
I highly recommend spending the money on the powder coating for the air cleaner. It is a part that comes off often and mine still looks superb after three years. My powder coating guy calls it GM 30% Gloss and it is an exact match for the factory finish.

Hi jts,
I believe the air cleaner bases of that era were painted gloss black.
They were hung on a hook of some sort and sprayed.
Of course this was done quickly and using a minimum of paint. This lead to varying amounts of coverage and gloss on the same base, and certainly from base to base.
The inner surfaces often had very little paint

Alan

I would suggest powder coating! Had all three air cleaner parts from my 1975 L48 sand blasted and powder coated gloss black. I was so impressed with results that this fall I will have the fan, pulleys etc. done as well. I think you will be very glad you did.
