Default 1978 tt steering column

I can not get my center shaft on my steering column to lock down during reassembly I go to lock down the steering shaft lock plate I get it just about to the point where I can get the retaining clip in and the center shaft pops loose.

Not sure if you have it, but life is a lot easier if you get one of those cheap $10 tools to lock it down. I fought with mine, finally admitted I was not going to win that battle and went on eBay, got one for about $10. IN a few seconds I got the clip in place. Probably will never use it again, but was worth the money. Try harbor freight or one of those places, but you need the tool. And welcome to the club. Lots of info available ( sometimes too much) but most everyone wants to help.

Go to a hardware store and purchase a 5/16-18 UNC set screw or a #20 Allen screw. Thread it into the upper steering shaft and torque the screw so that it locks the upper shaft from telescoping. That will allow you to compress the toothed locking plate and insert your c-clip.

Hope that this helps,

The center bolt on this tool will screw in to the upper shaft to lock the telescope.
