Default Going hard in gear........sometimes.

Hello everyone. 1980 Corvette with automatic. Engine idle at 700 RPM. When shifting into reverse or drive it goes into gear so smooth. Other times it hits so hard. You can feel the slam at the rear end. What would cause a smooth movement one time and a hard slam the next? I had all u-joints checked and all are tight. Thanks, Don.

You need to get under there and give all the parts a good inspection.
Starting with the upper and lower differential cushions

Mine does that occasionally as well. What I noticed is that the heavy clunks are when the car is colder.
