I replaced the stock exhaust system on my 77 L48 with a true dual system from Corvette Central. Installation was easily done by myself and it has a nice tone to it. I recall that it cost somewhere around $ 400 with shipping.

It depends on what your future plans are. If you're not going to change anything else, then I would recommend a dual set up with 1.625" primary long-tube headers going into a 2.5" collector. That should open things up enough to get that L-82 breathing better without killing the low end torque.

If you plan to put mild performance heads on the car (180 - 190 cc), then those headers are still a good choice. However, if you plan on changing the cam, increasing the compression, putting large heads on and spooling up to 6000 or so rpm, then your header selection depends on how much power you plan to make.

Hope this helps.

Do you have to pass emissions testing?

I have the Hooker 2 1/4 inch system, Hooker headers, and Dynomax super turbos to put on... I had the super turbos on other cars, and really like them...noce tone, loud if you really get ito it, but relatively quiet cruising around...

Cant wait to get the system installed...

I have an original-mile 79, that came to me with only 9,600 miles on the clock. I am trying to keep mine relatively close to stock as well.

I have coming: from Allen, their chambered muffler delete kit, which is basically an axle-back kit, along with a high-flow cat replacement.

I can let you know how it sounds after I install.

Too bad your not closer to me.. I have a true dual 74 system with new polished turbo style mufflers for $75 on craigslist that I pulled off the car when I bought it and installed sidepipes on my new engine..
No cats on 74 and older systems. People keep calling and saying they will take it and then thats the last I hear from them.

Based on what you've posted so far, it seems you're mainly interested in changing the exhaust sound. Is that correct?

I too have a 76 but L-48. I have Hooker cermaic coated long tube headers with 3 inch collectors coupled to 2 1/2 reducers then 2 1/2 exhaust pipes with Magnaflow turbo muflers and stock style turn down tips. She sounds real good!!! The pipes were custom made and installed by a local muffler/exhaust shop.
