Default Pics - Thought I'd break out the SKIL saw - on the vette WS frame

Two nights ago I started cutting the windshield frame out of the 75 - and
preparing the 70 to accept it. I measured down 10" on each pillar and
marked them appropriately. At first, I planned to use a air powered cut-
off tool to cut them, but I had this nice new saw with a new metal
cutting blade.

Well, it didn't go as smoothly as I'd have liked, so I grabbed
the good ol' hacksaw to finish the job. It was better cutting by hand, giving
smoother and more accurate cuts. I left a little extra metal, which was wise.
The cuts weren't exactly matched, but close enough to grind down and
make near perfect in the dimensions.

After making the first two cuts, you need to support the frame:

Here's what you have left. Looks surreal :

Here's the 70 - just tossing the frame on top :

Last night, I was out after the Super Bowl Championship New England
Patriots whipped butt on Pitt. I wrapped up sometime around 2AM. These
are the pics from last night:

All in all, it worked out pretty well. The fit looks good, and I tested the Ttops
tonight. Lookin good for welding this weekend. The next stop is the minor
rust in the lower corner (drivers only) :

I'll post some more pics of the welding and grinding soon !!

:seeya

Looks like you are doing a super job. I went through this with my bird cage also, but mine was so bad I had to replace it with another one. Luckily I found one virtually rust free. It had some minor surface rust on it. Keep up the good work!

Hey Dave, looking great! You are really moving on that vette. I just got my new WS pillars in this week but can't attempt what your doing because I have to replace all the way down and also no welding skills. Mine should be going up to Johns Corvettes in Laconia NH to have the pillars put in very soon. I also ordred my new windshield. My vette is available if you want to take some last minute measurments. Is this weekend still on? I 'd be interested is checking out this master piece? Let me know!

Thanks to Steve, Bob, Mark, Markus - and all well wishers.
I'm putting this up to help inspire folks that think they might be able
to do it but don't want to take the leap. Freefalling is pretty fun, as long
as you aren't cutting up a car that you paid $15k for.

I don't have any pics yet, but I put the WS mouldings on the top corners
and put the Ttops on. It's starting to look like a vette again !!! Woooohhooooooo !

Haha Markus - that was just lying around on the floor of the 70 when it was
delivered - so I propped it up for kicks. Glad someone noticed.

EBAY: RARE 1970 1/2 height windshield Corvette project - 1 of 1 !! NR - starts at $10000

So are you going to cut down the windsheild on the 75, and make it a sunny out only topless cruiser?

Looking good so far!

Wow, and I am all proud of myself because I removed the guage bezel and cut it for a stereo! Seeing what you are doing makes me wonder about doing a chopped Vette, except you'd have to be under 4 feet tall to sit in it :D Good luck- I hope the windshield fits!!!

I got them from ZIP for $600 which includes the 2 sides, 2 corners and the top. Zip was the cheapest, everywhere else it was around $700 - $800.

Good God! O.k. inform the guy who has'nt been following your progress('til now). Why are we doing this to your vette(s) now? Was the '70 rolled? I was toying with the idea at work today(no kidding!) of putting 3rd gen A-pillars and windshield in my 2nd Gen. Formula. To get it to lay back and be more aerodynamic without going into the expense of having a custom windshield made and if it ever got broke I would'nt cry. Plus as much of a hodge-podge as Ill have when I get done atleast it will have all came from GM. But I thought I was the only one crazy enough to start cutting up my car with a hacksaw! Its looking pretty good though, if I ever get to the point I decide to do it, I'll look you up! :yesnod:
