small block hood clearance?
I'm wanting to put a standard deck big block in a 71 small block car. Can it be done without changing the hood?

really doubt it, with a big block using a big block hood people are always having clearance issues when trying to find aftermarket intakes

If you go for a new hood (LT1 of L88 style) to make a BB fit I would recommend getting a long hood replacement that eliminates the wiper door and its vacuum operator....
They are avail for the chrome bumper years.

Q-jet with stock air-breather, repro lid
GM Pancake manifold
I added some insulation material to the underside of my hood (BB style), it's a light less than 1/4" thick and follows the contours
My air-breather nut isn't the standard wingnut and does stick up a little past the top edge of the breather lid. About 3/16" above the edge here
The breather nut just clears the hood insulation when idling but just touches it when the engine loads. Here's the mark it leaves.
I'll likely machine a little off the back of the nut to give it a little more clearance but I've only got about 3/16 until the breather lid hits anyway.
Just so you have an idea how much room there is. Forget about regular manifolds, holleys, etc. Guys are using drop base breathers to get stuff to fit under BB hoods.
