Default 12 bolt conversion

After discussing the build with Mike we decided to start the 12 bolt thread now. There will be a lot of pictures and a description of the work needed to complete the conversion. Some new parts have been designed that require some machining to be done and more may possibly be on the way.

That's going to be sweet. Mike does nice work.

What gear ratio?

Gear ratio is 4.11 to 1. The new caps are cnc machined to match the corvette housing machined to Mike's specs. I had a lengthy conversation with Mike before I machined the caps. We are in the process of verifying the difference from the left to right cap so I can have a production run for Mike and any other interested parties. All the gears for this build have been rem polished. I hope to add more new parts in the near future to aid in these builds. Thank you Mike for including me in this build and I really enjoy our conversations.
And yes Mike does good work.

I've always been interested (in a purely engineering geeky way) in these 12 bolt conversions/upgrades, but I rarely get to see much of the details. The first thing that always pops into my head is the pinion placement. With this upgrade, is the ring gear the same diameter as the original (placing the pinion in the same general space), and is the pinion shaft length and front bearing position somewhat similar to the stock setup? My first impression on this conversion is wondering how compatible the housing is (ie: how much machining is necessary) for the new pinion shaft size and length.

Keep the pictures coming.

Dave, great pics. I think you are doing the caps for the Super 10 Mike is building for me right now. Love the pics! Would have loved to do a 12 bolt but wanted 3.08's. Great work you are doing there.

I will be watching this. I have been debating what to do when my rear end bites the big one and definitely want to stay IRS. I really like the idea of the 12 bolt route. Those caps are a thing of beauty!

Hello Bill,
Mike has 2 sets of caps, one is for your build and the other is for mine. I do have an extra set on my desk so I can prepare for production run. We have discussed your build a few times and I am glad I could contribute.Your build should be called the Ultimate 10 because I do not believe it can be made any stronger. The R&D side of what I do is what I enjoy the most. It is normally an expensive proposition for the manufacturer and sometimes hard to sell. My hope is to eliminate some of that cost to improve availability of parts.
Dave

Thanks Dave, talked to Mike a few days ago and he too, was really impressed with your work. I am hoping this thing will last, we will see. Just recammed for some more power so should put it to a good test. Thanks again for your contribution to my build.

Default 3" Chrome moly half shafts?

How much power are they handling compared to 3" HD? I have a 6 link and don't know if 3.5" will fit inside the safety loops. Anybody have a similar set up? I have a 582 with a g-force GF-5R with a soft lock clutch. I do have a 468 built to over 600 i can switch to. Thanks for your time
