O2 Sensor Side Pipes
Hello,
I have slowly been restoring and modifying my 76 for the last 2 years. I want the overall design of my car to appear stock (minus the Hooker Side Pipes), but hidden away I want modern tech.
My main idea for the build was to convert my SBC to a self learning EFI system. I have change my mind multiple time of which system to get until last year at Sema Holley announced their budget Sniper EFI. After waiting a year I have the kit and I'm in the process of installing it along with a new universal Painless wiring harness.
Anyways when I was planning I found a few threads of people putting O2 bungs in the Side Pipe Headers, but I could not find that many good pictures. I've decided to show a few from my build.
By the way for those who have seen the picture with the O2 bung sticking straight out the top and the wire running through the 69 gills. I really like the looks of it! If you finished off the wire with braided stainless steal sleeves it would look even cooler.
Here is a view from under the car. I used a 45* bung to try and make the sensor not be tilted down so much.
From this angle looking forward the O2 sensor clears the frame. I had room it looks like I could have raised it up a little more.
Top view: you can see the sensor a little.
engine bay: Its still a work in progress. I have a lot of wiring to still do and decide what I want for the front pulley system.

I have an LS1 and side pipes and that is pretty much where my O2 bungs are also. I am told that it is ideal to have them more at the 10:00 or 2:00 position so they don't get condensation in them and they will last longer. I have had three seasons and about 10K miles on them and had not problems so far. If I have to replace them every six or eight years then I can live with that.
