my cousin just picked up a 68 convertible, the car has the removable hard top but no trace of a folding convertible top. I would guess that the folding top and all of the components have been removed. Did Chevrolet ever make a removable hard top vette without the folding top?

Yes, you could order a car with just the hardtop and no soft top.
