1968 400 3x2 cam
Hey guys,
Got a 68 I'm doing a rebuild on. Frame is nearly back to a roller. Gonna get an engine together soon. Just wanted input on the engine goin back in and if there's any point to giving it any "upgrades".
It's a 427 that's a 3x2 400 HP. Stock 215 heads with forged 6223 crank hypereutectic Pistons. Nothing fancy. M-20 4 speed and 3.36 gears. I plan to build it as normal but didn't know if anyone's messed around with a different cam in a standard set up? What were the results? I'm of the opinion to just go standard grind.
Still want to have enough vacuum produced to run the features of the car that need it.

Before I had mine rebuilt is was a pretty standard 427, Q-jet and a compcam.
Also had headers. If the heads are still stock you could have them upgraded. Take a look at how Mark does it.

If you plan on keeping the car for a long time and you have some spare 'coin' to drop on the engine, you might consider a spunky roller cam.

Keeper
To me it's a keeper car kinda deal. That said I'm even running the stock cast exhaust manifolds. The heads are already machined and rebuilt.
Maybe there's not a ton of value to upping the cam if everything else will restrict it on the way out.

x2 dawson and reckless
The right cam headers and good tuning really wakes up a BBC doesnt take too much to have a good time
Edit: love the sound of solid flat tappets but HR is probably better long run
If you dont DIY Mark an excellent choice..or listen to Will hed never steer you wrong.

Have you discussed valve to piston clearance with your builder? I don't know what kind of pistons you're using but the closed chamber heads make it important to know how much clearance you're working with, and that can determine how much cam you can use. Rollers, with their fat lobes, will hang the valves open longer than a flat tappet cam. Just something to think about.
