Mystery clicking noise from under shifter console
Hello fellow members. I consider myself fairly mechanically inclined and do most work on my 79 C3 Base. I know my boundaries and have a great mechanic for when I get close to crossing one.
In just the last week there has been the development of a clicking sound from below the shifter console (auto trans) that varies with vehicle speed, very fast at higher speeds and it slows down as I am approaching and coming to a stop. Once stopped, it' gone. Sometimes, it disappears completely while in motion. A couple of very simplistic descriptions: something wrapped around the drive shaft hitting below the console as it spins or, back in the old days kids used to clothes pin a playing card to the spokes of a bicycle.
Any thoughts before I go running to my mechanic?
Thanks.
