'80-'82 owners, set me straight
was on the 'parts for sale' section and member had a full differential for sale. i inquired as to whether it was a dana 36 or dana 44. he said all '80-'82s used dana 44. i was under the impression that automatics used dana 36 and 4-speeds used dana 44. am i wrong?
i do know that my '81 4-speed uses a 3" u-joint (and stub axle) for the 1/2 shafts, i also have a different size u-joint on my tranny output shaft. my brother-in-law also has an '81 but it is automatic. his uses a 2.5" 1/2 shaft/stub axle and same size joints on the main drive shaft. now this doesn't necessarily mean squat but when we worked on his car a while back, i could swear his diff was different in size.
help me out here guys. i at least want to know once and for all where i stand on this.

o.k. guys, here's the scoop from richmond gear who i figure are going to be the most knowledgable short of dana and chevrolet. '80-'82 used a dana 44 for both automatic and manual transmissions. the casings are the same and use the same ring and pinion but use different stub axles. now for the cool part. ever looked for a performance R&P for your diff? hard to find, huh? turns out the 'modified' dana 44 only applies to the casing itself. our diffs will accept the standard dana 44 R&P from jeep/bronco/k-10, k-20 chevy and f series ford truck front diff for 4x4. how  is that we don't have to order 'special corvette' gears for our cars. just checked jegs and that means we can get a gear set for our cars for about $180 as opposed to earlier sharks dana 36 for $270 or c-4 for $320+
i love learning new stuff, especially when it saves me money :yesnod:
