It's a light monitoring system that allows you to check status of lights (headlights, turn signals, brake lights, high beams) while in the driver seat.

Hi!
A fibreoptic wire is used to transmit light. On our Corvettes, fibre optics are used to tell the driver which lights are burnt. Above the shifter on the console, you have a fibre optic wire attached to each headlight and hi-beam as well as the two front turn-signal lights. Below the shifter, you have the two brake lights and the one for the license plate. When you turn on your lights, the little lenses light up in the car. The fibre optics are found in 68-71 Vettes and apparently in a few other Chevys (but don't quote me on that ;) ) and I think are one of the most intuitive designs in any car. Fibre optic wires today are just a few pennies a foot and in my opinion shoule be in every car. They are very  !

When I get around to it, and get the $$$ to make an aluminum console I'm going to wire my 81 with fiber optics for all the lights, I'm still trying to design how it will look without it looking bubba or rice :jester

Don't remember where I read it, but the idea is to monitor your lights and give "THE FUZZ" one less reason to stop you.

In addition to what's been said...fiber optics were first introduced on the Mako Shark concept car...everybody thought it was a neat idea do it found its way into production. It was difficult to maintain so it was phased out. I'd love to have a car with the feature...I think it's pretty neat
