700R4 with torque converter?
I have a shop willing to build a late model 700R4 trans with high performance internals able to handle 500+ HP and 500+TQ....they will also install a 2800 stall converter and install all into my car for $2200.00........Would this be a good price to pay for complete build up, converter, and complete turn key install? I'm currently running TH350 with 3:70 gears. Car runs 12.4 @ 112 MPH....Also I'm turning 3000 RPM @ 60 MPH:seeya Cappy

Sounds like a good deal to me. Considering the amount of work to fit that trans in, its a really good deal, not just a simple swap. If it is a reputable shop with good customer service I say
Ok i was think your car would have a th-350, but does it have a 700r4 from factory? not sure what year the switch was.

The shop is owned by one of our club members.......The mechanic doing the build up on the 700R4 used to work for Hughes Trans. Car goes in Monday and should be completed by Friday. He's also using a 700R4 out of a police cruiser.....Thanks for the reply...... :seeya Cappy

YOU DA MAN!!! That sounds like a good deal to me and a great upgrade!!! You are going to be pulling wheelies when you launch. I think Nastee383 ran that combo - 700r4 and 3.70 rearend. That would be awesome!

MY question would be how much freeway driving you do with the car?? on Hawaii I would think not nearly too much...certainly not ripping up and down I 95 in Florida for hours on end....I think the decrease in reliability of any O/D auto tranny is not worth it for your purposes.....I"d go a 350/400 rebuild first, for reliability.....

If your car is less of a freeway driver and more of a racer, I'd go for a built-up TH350 or TH400. OD trannys can indeed be built up, but they're nowhere near as simple or tough as 3-speed units.

My car slowed down in the 1/4 when I changed to a 700R4 with 3.55 gearing. The 700 eats more power than a built TH350 and the gear spacing is all wrong. First is to low and it has big rpm drops 2-3. For your $2000 install what kind of convertor are you getting? That's where you need to spend $700 -$1200 with a 700 tranny.
The TH350 can be built to take as nearly much power as a 700. but people don't really ever make super high end 350's they go TH400.
I would check into buying a 500+ hp 200R4 first. It's an easier conversion.

gkull,
I'm trying to have the cake and eat it too.....The TH350 is a built up for racing unit and it performs very well, however I was kind of looking for some better gas milage and lower RPMs while up on the freeway.....Then have the launch out of the hole at the strip.....Oh well, I still have time for more comments. It seems everyone is favoring retain TH350 or go 200R4....... :seeya Cappy
