I am not sure how old you are, but do you ever remember seeing the stamped metal "credit card" loooking plate that was glued to your parent's GM cars in the 60's & 70's? That is all it is. Roughly credit card size and shape with information on it that the dealer would get during service or warranty work. He would put the POP in his "credit card" machine, actually a POP imprinter, and run the machine over it. This would imprint your cars information on the work order. Nothing fancy, just a nice-to-have kind of thing.

On the higher dollar gm cars you look for as much PEDIGREE/DOCUMENTATION you can get.Its unfortunate but every thing now can be recreated.I mean every thing bill of sale, pop plates, delivery sheets, you name it it is available you just have to pay for it
In the old days when you seen a car with the pop plate it kinda made you feel better about the history off the car.

Here is a picture of one from my 72. They were used form about 67-72. Not totally sure of the time used. They were a quick way to keep warranty records before computers.

There are photos of POPs on the '70 Registry website. It's in the Resources / Photographic Library / Documentation section. Here's the direct link:
