Default Should VIN #s be printed out?

I have seen some posted in threads here and I have seen some in Magazine letters. Then I have seen magazines that put XXXs in the last 2-4 positions, are they protecting themselves, or the owner, or both? What is your opininons?

Well here is a reason. If you have a 30+ year old car with an unknown history, the last thing you want is a letter from a previous owner 5 times removed telling you his car was stolen 20 years ago and the vin matches your vin, which means your car is his car..... see ya in court! :seeya MJ

This is intersting, as I was asked about this here only last week. One of our prospective CCCUK members was unhappy about including his VIN in the club membership application form (our memebership sec likes to keep a fairly accurate database). I know there is some concern, and Corvette Fever for one doesn't publish full VINs in articles. But, and this is only a question, wouldn't it be just as easy for someone trying to use the VIN for the wrong reasons just to walk up to a car and copy the VIN?

I agree, in my opinion a thief will more than likely be fairly close to where you live and if he sees your car one time he has got your VIN#.

Other than a shady history being exposed, there is no harm in publishing a VIN. The VIN, as has been mentioned, is in clear sight anyway. Here's mine: 1Z37K2S519200

I'm not really worried about my car's unknown multiowner, cross border history! I just used that as an example. See, here is my vin:

194678S4044XX  MJ

I can't come up with a good reason to blank out the license plate numbers in photographs like everyone does. After all, you always display the license plate in clear view.
