Default Question For Rowdy Rat('70-'72 LT-1 Exhaust).....

On eBay, there is a '70-'72 LT-1 exhaust system for $1,650.00  But were'nt the "production pipes"(rear ones)welded to the mufflers? They don't seem to be attached in the eBay pic. Are these just "new GM over-the-counter" ones, not actual production ones???

ps, Going to Stone Mountain April 3-5???

While you await Stans response, here is a previous thread he posted with some very detailed pictures.

The pipe and muffler were welded together by Walker (the OEM supplier) and delivered to St. Louis as an assembly.
I think the ebay seller is claiming he has a GM service replacement system that GM stopped making a long time ago. You would still loose some points in NCRS judging, wouldnt you? Clearly a "replacement" . But, would you loose fewer points than with a Zip replacement system? (much cheaper obviously) MJ gosh, we are gonna have to move this thread to the factory correct forum!

Paul,

You are correct, the original rear pipes were welded to the muffler... The weld joint is right at the muffler inlet.

The service replacement pipes and mufflers were designed so that the rear pipe slipped into a belled inlet pipe from the muffler and was secured with a clamp. The service replacement rear pipes should show the same compression wrinkles as the originals, but are obviously shorter to account for the length of the inlet pipe on the service replacement muffler. True service replacement mufflers will all have the embossed "W" to identify the manufacturer, Walker. Unlike the originals, most will also have an embossed part number, will lack the centering tabs for the exhaust tips, and some will have a second set of mounting brackets to accomodate several applications.

For what it's worth, the service replacement front pipes were exactly like the originals.

My guess is that a service rear exauast is what is being auctioned on Ebay... A perfect service replacement rear pipe/muffler setup will run around $1,500-$2,000 so it appears that this auction is running right at market value. As MJ (and apparently the seller) mentioned, these service pipes and mufflers have been discontinued for quite some time, but they'll occasionally pop up for sale at swap meets and such.

If you need part numbers for the service parts Paul, just let me know.

MJ,

That's a tough one...

Yes, you would still lose points for the service replacement system. The fact is that from an originality standpoint, there is no replacement under car exhaust currently available that is even "mostly" correct in appearance for the 1968-1972 cars... There are enough variations from the production system that a deduction would be warranted in any case. It IS possible to get a service replacement exhaust to look pretty close, but I would guess that you'll have $2,500 wrapped up in an exhaust system by they time you are finished... That's a lot of money to pick up just a few points.

For most people, buying a system from Allen's and taking a small hit on points during judging is the most cost effective choice.
