Default Saturday Trivia-FE7 Gymkhana Suspension

The RPO FE7 was available 1974 through 1982. But it was altered significantly in that period of time. What was the major alteration?

That is was part of the Z07 Package(HD Suspension & Brake), of which only was available '73-'75, then it was a stand alone option after '75. :D

Paul,
I was looking to more specifics on dimensions of swaybars and springs.

Sorry Guys and Gals. I have developed a bad cold so the answer will come tomorrow. I have to get some rest this evening. Apologies. But here is a hint for part of the puzzle: 9/16" vrs. 7/16". That is the back. Think also of the front. And the spring width.

In 1978, the rear spring width went to 2 1/2" as opposed to 2 1/4". I am one of the lucky boys with a 2 1/2" rear spring. My new rear spring has spacers to make it sit flat in the spring plates.

I don't know about changes in bar diameter, my 78 FE7 came stock w/ the 1.125" front and 7/16" rear.

Hey guys, this has absolutely nothing to do with this topic, but why can't I see the "post new topic" button? I went to Log In and it says I'm already logged in, so it should be there, what's up. I'll check back in the morning. gotta go to bed. later.

The 1973-77 cars equipped with RPO FE7 utilized a seven-leaf rear spring. It was 2 1/4" in width. The front sway bar was 15/16" and the rear was 9/16."

Most 1978-79 cars with standard suspension went to a 2 1/2" spring with nine leaves. The FE7 rear spring was 2 1/4" wide and had seven leaves. To compensate for the deceased width, FE7 springs mount to the bottom of the differential cover with two spacers, one in the front and the other in the back. The front sway bar was 1 1/8" and the rear 7/16." In 1980-82 it seems that GM went back to the nine-leaf, 2 1/2" spring for FE7. The mono-leaf, fiberglass spring made its debut in 1981 for vehicles with automatic transmissions and with the standard suspension.

My pic shows the 7/16" rear bar.

77 FE-7 Front 1 1/8 Rear 7/16 Bars.
A good standard of handling is the Road & Track slalom course.
77 sets new record in 77 with 63.6 mph. "hampered by stock air pressures". Later matched by Ferrari 512 BB. Fastest C3. Better than many C4. 84 did slightly better.
For reference, Mario Andretti turned 63.4 in a 1999 Corvette. http://ganeys.home.sprynet.com/77facts.htm
Rec. for 68-77.
