Does that mean I can rebuild my rear bearings without a press and other equipment? Who makes them?

More details please! I'd like to be able to setup my rear spindles myself. Slip fit is the only convenient way to do it plus they are easier to replace if need be!

Hi, They need to be machined down on a lathe so the bearing just slides on, sorta like your front wheel I & O wheel bearings. It does make life bunches easier :yesnod: ,,,,,,,,Peace, Moosie :seeya

Any specs on how much to turn them down? This is definitely something I'd like to do. when I get to that point.

Has anyone that used these have any problems with the inner bearing race spinning on the spindle and ruining the spindle?

redvetracr,
How often do you have to replace bearings? I find that if i install new bearings, they become noticably looser after one day of driver school. This causes some loss in brake pedal. Do you know of anyone who is using the 74-75 truck master cylinder with a 1.25 bore as recommended in the Chevy power manual?
I will probably make both sides of my spindle slip fit the next time i take it apart. Hammering/pressing on and off is just too much trouble to deal with when you replace bearings a lot. I don't see how this could be a problem since this is how the front is set up.

The only benefit that I can think of, and its a remote one. When I broke a spindle thee pressed on bearing is what kept the wheel from coming out of the hub. But from what I understand that I was pretty lucky when i happened, the car was not moving. It might have been a very different story had I been going around a corner at speed.

I've heard of racers machining their spindles a little to permit a slip fit. Suggest taking your spindles and new bearings to a machine shop and have the spindles machined to fit. Should not take more than a few thousandths to allow this, and then you will always be able to use the bearings that are original specs for the car.

dman535,
Awesome, how did you snap that spindle, drag racing? You are harder on parts than i am.

I've always done it.
It takes very little to make them slip fit. Putting them in a lathe and using emery cloth will do it. I did some on a huge drill press once that allowed me to "clamp" on to thread area and let it slowly turn. Just mic shaft and polish until you get a slip fit. Makes things much easier. When you buy race type aftermarket shafts (Tom's) you'll find they are all slip fit.
In the event of a broken shaft, the pressed on bearings aren't going to save much on a disc brake car. If the shaft is broken and there was no caliper holding all in line, the shaft would come right out with that nice pressed on bearing still attached and the inner one would still be pressed onto the piece left attached to the u-joint.
On a drum brake car they they "might" help some, but it really depends on where it breaks.
The caliper is your best safety device for not having it all come out from under car. Trust me....I've tested it a few times!

Here is the other end of it.
The 700r4 in my car shift pretty hard. On a manual shift I can chirp the tires going into third gear. Not to mention that that shaft has about 100K of abuse on it. Funny thing though, the drivers side shaft looked ok.

The best benefit of slip fitting the inners is the ability to take the bearing on and off to setup the clearance with the shims and the ability to service (grease) the bearings during their life. It is no big deal to press the outer off or on because you aren't dealing with the arms or spindle hubs or the brake caliper bracket holders just the spindle and the bearing.
Hey Redvetracr, saw you on EBAY bidding on the knock off recreation J-56 1968 Front brake brackets. Just call Caledonia and buy them direct, they have been listing these for about a year on a consistent basis.

Re: rear spindles?? Who has slip fit "outer" bearings (MikeC)
Mike you don't turn them down, you just chuck them in a lathe and polish the inner bearing with emery paper. Keep polishing and checking until the bearing starts to slid on without needed a press fit.
I have both my inners and outers slip fit but I wouldn't recommend a normal set to have both inner and outers slip fit. The outer doesn't need to be slip fit since you can take the rear axles out or in without a problem with the outs press fit and and inner slip fit.
I yearly remove my axles for routine checking and find with the slip fit inners it is a simple deal to remove the nut and flange and slide the axles out with just a blow from a rubber hammer.
In my case I have slip fit inners and outs but my shim is fixed and both flanges are removable.
I recommend polishing the inner bearing press fit surface with emery cloth for
future easy assembly and removal.
This is my home made super duty axles with removable wheel flanges.

CAREFULL GENTLEMEN!!!! They are pressed on for a reason. I know some of you racing guys are going to argue with me, but that pressed on axle is the only thing other than the caliper ears that is keeping that wheel and axle on the car. Y`all worry about Knock Offs comming off, but do not think twice about creating an equally or more dangerous configuration. I have seen the axles break and take the caliper with it and the wheel and car end up in the woods. I will leave mine like they are thank you.
