Default Holley Float Level -- Is gas leaking out of your carb bad???

Trying to tune this Holley Avenger, so I picked up a book and started reading. The first thing I checked was the float level, which should be easy because this model has the clear sites.

I don't see a gas line in the site so I figure its set too low.

So I loosen the retaining screw, and gas squirts out big time! Does this mean the float bowls are filled to the top? It appears that the adjustment nuts are all the in (tightened).

If thats the case, how far out should I back these nuts out to even begin to adjust this thing.

BTW, the car runs, but is quite weak. Carb is likely the culprit. After this I'll set the fuel mixture w/ my vacuum gage...

Thanks in advance for any help.

***UPDATE***
Ok, just removed the retaining nut and tryed to lower the float with one counterclockwise turn (correct for avengers?). This was a bad idea as a waterfall of gas poured down the throat of my carb. It resembled a fountain in front of a casino. So I undid that change and we are back running, but poorly. What now?

No that doesn't mean the float level it too high. The needle and seat are under pressure and when you back the screw off the gasket no longer seals. Just slight loosen the screw then with a 5/8th wrench slightly turn the nut and retighten the screw.
The would remove the sight plug and adjust the float level so just a slight splash of gas comes out the front hole when the car is idling, not much just a slight slosh.
For the back once agian remove the slight plug and this is set slightly higher that a little trickles out when the motor is idling.
Remember just break the screw loose , rotate the nut , clockwiseraises the
level and and counterclockwise lowers the level.
Just lightly snug the screw back up to prevent leakage.

Turning the nut counterclockwise RAISES the float level. You're likely way high now so, before starting the engine, turn the nut clockwise 1 1/2 turns. Be sure to hold the nut still with a wrench while turning the lock screw or the nut will turn also and screw up the adjustment. Start it up. If it's still gushing, shut it down and lower the level a little more and try it again. Once you get it to stop gushing fuel, remove the sight plug and set the float level so that only a little fuel seeps out of the sight hole.

Thanks vetterodder, I found that out the hard way.

One of the "conveniences" of the Avenger line is clear sites that don't have to be removed. The problem is I don't know whether its high and filled with gas -or- low and below the site completely

IMO, if the fuel level couldn't be seen because it was lower than sight, the engine wouldnt run. (Carb too dry)

If the fuel level is above the glass, the engine wouldn't idle. (Flood)

That's why you need to remove the sight plugs. While the clear sight plugs seem like a good idea, in my experience anyway, the're not clear enough to allow an accurate view of the fuel level and that's why I recommended their removal.
