harmonic balancer removal help please
I know I need a "puller". But how does that bolt come out, or does it? When I try to remove the bolt it just turns the motor, which is kind of cool since one of the heads is off.
Anyway, I don't have a Chilton's handy and was hoping for someone to help out a novice mechanic.
Edit: I have already removed the water pump, pully & fan and crank pulley.
Thanks, Mark :flag :chevy

Ooh, Ooh, Mr Kotter!!!! I know this one! I know the answer!!!! Pick me!!! :D
I just faced this a few weeks ago. Here's what to do. Go to the hardware store and get two bolts that are the same thread as the ones that hold the crank pulley on the balancer EXCEPT get them about 2" longer than the ones you took out. Then, install them in two of the holes in the balancer. Wedge a breaker bar or prybar between them to use as a lever to pull against and to keep the motor from turning as you break the balancer bolt loose.
Or if your flywheel is still installed, you can wedge a screwdriver between the flywheel and starter to keep the motor from turning.
Thanks to Lars for the tip on the balancer bolt and prybar!

You need to somehow wedge the balancer from turning. My flywheel was still attached so I wedged it with a block of wood to keep it from moving. You might need a breaker bar to break the bolt loose.
Once you get the bolt out and have the balancer remover ready, screw the bolt back in most of the waywithout the washer & then use the remover. This will prevent any damage to the threads on the crank.
