Will 15x10 inch rims fit my 72?
Doe anyone know if I can fit a 15x10 inch rim on the rear of my 72 without it extending past the
quarter panels and what the backspacing I need will be?

For backspacing 4 1/2 is about max, maybe 4 3/4 but NOT 5 inches.
The tire will stick out the side past the lip a little.
This is a picture of an 8.5 rim with a 305 tire and effective 4.5 inch backspacing.
This is the stickout with this combination, Yours will be 1 /12 inches further out then this.

My car is at the painter now so I can't measure backspace for you. Sorry! They are 15x9 stock Ralley Wheels and they look awsome. I'll try and send you a pic of the car via email.

PS. Two pics on their way

Pat, the easy way to measure all this crap is to just get under the car while loaded...meaning on the wheels....and measure how much tire and then rim distance you have to the closest points of any frame/sway bar/e-brake tab/t-arm or in front, any similar points with tires in full over steering position...
that will give you an idea of what you can handle.....
I found in the rear, the most my '72 wanted to take and leave maybe 1/4 inch between sidewall bulge and closest metal....was about an ADDITIONAL 3/4 inch to the inside....make that 1.5 inches more rim width...and that required moving the ebrake tab to behind the rotor....some guys like it on top of the t-arm better.....it didn't seem to work well there for ME.....
so I managed to fit my desired '92 vette rims on all 4 corners....I run 275/50/17 in rear....taller than C4 40 series....rides better, looks better...
NOW, further inspection has to be taken with smaller rims diameter....such things as leaf spring length/position/bolt clearance to the tire/rim combo....
and much less the allready given items....gotta look and think carefully...
NOW having said all that BS.....you gotta remember the HUBS are comprised to two normal bearings but mounted really close together, NOT like on a front end...so the amount of purchase/leverage that axel has in the hub arrangement is greatly reduced, and bearing stresses are increased greatly with any increase in side loading....in other words for overall bearing life and safety....you just plain SHOULD keep the overall centerline of the wheel in the same position.....no offsets introduced......keep it to an absolute minimum

I ordered 10" rims for mine and had to send them back for a set of 9" rims.
Check my site for pics/details.
