Life Span of Rear Wheel Bearings...
Mechanic called. The left rear wheel bearing and spindle are shot.
What is the life expectancy of properly set up bearings? Is there a maintenance interval for them (lubrication, adjustment)?
Thanks

I got 175K miles on my left one (bearing, that is  ) before it gave up - like last week. Right one (bearing, that is  ) will be replaced within month. If I get another 150K miles on the second set, I would say I am doing well.

there are no maintence intervals. Did your mechanic tell you how he came to the conclusion that it was bad. We offer 5 yrs unlimited mileage warranty on our assemblies. Not all bearing assemblies were set up properly from the factory. Most assemblies were set up from the factory at 3-8 thou. Our are set up at 0 to a 1/2 thou.

Save yourself future problems and have Val Steel do them for you. I am glad I did as another so called experts repair failed on a friends car this past weekend. Is seems that this is a special repair.

I've got 248,000 miles on my original rear wheel bearings. I've used a grease tool at every 75,000 miles. I used a Spindle tool and compatible grease without ever taking the bearings apart. I've heard all the stories as to why this won't work but 23 yrs and 248,000 miles say differently.

Larry82 Mine didn't make it that far. Not sure why. But if I could get 5000 out of my new ones, I'll feel blessed...
Van Steel Thanks for the feedback. When the bearing went out, I panicked and sent the car off to get fixed. I need to have it up and running before the Cruise-In. And I don't yet trust myself to do it right.
Garson - It's all around us. Isn't it?
Steve - It never ends. Actually, the car is going pretty well. The engine went in back in October, and has since been broken in. But the extra power seems to be leading to other issues. Oh, and Goodyear put the wrong lug nuts on when they gave me new tires. So my rear wheel nearly came off while driving...Yeah. I'm going to post this one...We were at the Medina Dyno shop last week. I was hoping to see you there. It was a great time. I'll be at Burger King, soon enough, though...
Slaine - So you do maintenance at regular intervals. How? Do you have greaseable bearings? I've seen these, and I thought the manual suggested some sort of maintenance, or checking the bearing tolerance. But this is all greek to me.
Thanks everyone for all the feedback!

No the bearings don't have fittings, I bought a tool from The Spindle People.
It allows greasing of the rear bearings without disassembling the spindle.
