Default Marvel mystery oil. Amazing stuff!

My "spare" car is a 83 Caddy DeVille with 200k miles. Lately it developed a loud tapping sound when warm. Sounded like a stuck lifter. I've heard some people swear by marvel mystery oil so I thought at $2 I can't loose. Poured it in and it hasn't made a sound since. Completely cured it! Engine runs and sounds like new. I think it will go another 200k!

Poured it in where? OK, I am guessing the oil, but you can put it in other holes too can't you? :) MJ

I think it's hydrolic fluid. That stuff will eat anything ;)

I've used this in my Trans Am, it still needs a rebuild

I certainly don't think it can hurt anything but I wouldn't expect it to perform magic. It did loosen up crap in my motor improving oil flow and actually making the oil on the next change not instantly go black with the crud still haning out in the motor.

Poured in the oil. I read you can put it in gas too and it will clean out throttle bodies, carb etc. Neat stuff.

I got this car for free and every mile I get out of it is a bonus. It's actually in great shape.

I love the stuff. It came greatly recommended by my dad and his friends. They used it back in the 60s.

One of the things many of us did back in the 60's & '70's was to drip(pour) auto transmission fluid down our carbs while giving it a load of gas to keep it running as a way of cleaning it out. I think the theory was that it burned hotter than gas. Made a good mosquito fogger for sure. I wonder if Marvel Mystery Oil would work the same way.

Of course... that was back before there was pollution control devices.... such as us doing crazy stuff like that.

Most autoparts stores have it. I got it from autozone.

My dad swears by this stuff and always insited on doing a top engine cleaning for me be for I left for the 2 hour ride home. This consisted of pouring MMO down the carb until the car just about stalled out. Let it sit and then take it on the road. This ended when my wife started to make these trips with me. She did not appreciate the white cloud following her car for the first 10 miles. She was :bs while I was  I have used Mystery oil in the gas to remove varnish, Down the carb for sticky valves and in the oil for the same reason. It has good cleaning properties and low surface tension so it can get into tight spaces.

It is amazing stuff. My neighbor bought a 49 Harley that sat for 15 years. drained the oil, filled the cylinders with the stuff, let sit 24 hours, hand cranked engine as if it never sat a day. After 2 oil changes to flush all of it out, the bike never leaked a drop of oil.

I used tranny fluid in the vette (sat 24 years) and worked the same. I still don't have any leaks and little or no oil burn.

I had a neighbor who had a couple of '55 Chevy's. He put a little MMV in his gas tank with each fill-up. He said that it helped protect the valves and such. I always use Lead additive, but I tried this for several tankfuls. I was alarmed by the smoking and the odor it causes, so I switched back to the additive.

I used to run 1oz of Marvel Oil per 4 gallons of fuel when I ran carburetors. I won't be using it with fuel injection.

Would it be bad on a fuel injected motor? Either in the gas or the oil?

Auto trans fluid - high detergency lubricant.
MMO - solvent.

A different approach to a similar solution but the MMO will do things that the trans fluid can't like provide a probable and speedy fix to a noisy lifter, loosen stuck rings (which is a very common cause of oil usage). If all you want to do is keep the engine clean, then either does well though the MMO is a better mix with engine oil.

Yes, I use MMO. It smells good too.
