how to fix stress cracks in 'glass?
guys, im in the process of painting my 79, and i have some stress cracks down next to the bumpers. how should i go about fixing these?
i have heard to use mar-glass type material and i have heard to use mat and resin.
what do you recommend and how do you recommend applying it?
also, im going to glass my bumpers to the car, should i just mat on these or some of the same mar-glass material? i am going to use fusor smc-glass adhesive for the initial bond, then work from there
any suggestions?
ive read the paint papers on vettefaq
thanks

To fix stress cracks in glass you have to grind a bevel on both sides of the crack so that you end up with a "V" shape. Then mix up fiberglass resin with the hardener and apply at least 3 layers of fiberglass mat (don't use fiberglass cloth). When it hardens you can sand it down and reapply more resin and mat to low areas. Once you're satisfied with the repair you can use a VERY thin layer of body filler to skim coat the repair and sand it in preparation for primer. I prefer to use no body filler at all but I understand some of the new body fillers are much better than the older ones. If you want to read a good book on the topic get a copy of Ecklers fiberglass repair. It's worth the price.

:iagree: With one addition: 1979's have SMC fiberglass panels, so make
sure to use a resin that is rated for SMC.

:iagree: also but will add two more points. The V that you grind should be a gradual bevel and should extend about an inch on each side of the crack. Another thing that makes a stronger repair is to use a fiberglass roller to roll the matte tighter and force out excess resin. Good Luck, Craig :seeya
