Crash Dummy

I changed the oil on this vette today, but I am getting nothing on the dipstick. The service manual that came with this vette shows 4 quarts of oil +1 for the new oil filter, but it's hard to discern if if also includes a 454. My old Chilton's '66-'73 manual shows it as 5 quarts +1 for the oil filter. So... which is it? It's a stock oil pan and appears to be an aftermarket dipstick. While I am at it, how long should the dipstick be that comes on 454's?

Mine always seems to take just a tad over 5 quarts, maybe 5 1/4. My vettes not near me to take a measure of the dipstick unfortunately.

I can measure mine if need be, but I am not sure if it is accurate. Reason being, every V8 I have ever changed oil on took 5 or 6 quarts. The 454 in my 71 shows FULL with 4 QUARTS, including one for the filter. :eek: Never had a problem with oil pressure.

Thanks Pat & LAvetteman. I'm pushing 50-70lbs of oil pressure, so I've got to guess it's the wrong dipstick. Whenever one of you has time(just the next time you go take a ride in the vette) I'd appreciate you measuring it. I'm looking foward to going to the drag strip tomorrow afternoon. Looks as if it is going to be another really hot day.

All 454s had a 5 qt oil pan. So the change would be 5 qts plus the filter.

BG, measured it this afternoon. Tip to the bell that seats on the dipstick tube, 24 1/2".

End to end(tip to handle) 27 3/4"

My 71 454 takes 5 quarts at oil change.
