They can be replaced. I used a hole saw to drill out the rubber then press in the new ones. I only use rubber for street cars. Be sure the rod isn't bent from some Homer doing a rear wheel alignment. Some places heat them and straighten them out again,I prefer to replace them if they're bent. The rod are different between 63-74 and 75-82. The newer ones and the service ones are the larger head size. You can use the newer rods on an older car but be sure they don't bind in the bearing housing during extreme travel. I believe the smaller rods are again available too.

Any vette shop/vendor will have them, MOOG might make them as well.
Also don't forget there are special washers in between the rods and strut rod bracket. If they are rusty then get new ones. The cam bolts some times have cracked washers MOOG does make these,they come as a kit. You'll need a shock knocker to remove the lower shock mount without wrecking the threads.
