Having recently replaced my gas tank, I can assure you that there is no room for a bigger tank unless you remove the spare tire carrier and fabricate a tank to fill this space.

The gas clerks usually do a double or triple take when I come in to pay after filling my Suburban...first they check to see that they haven't hit a wrong button, then sometimes ask where my other vehicle is, then I tell them about the 40 gal tank and they usually feel sorry for me.

I guess everyone wishes he had more tank capacity at one time or another but 20 extra gallons, aside from the safety concerns, would add about 200 pounds of vehicle weight at the end of you chassis. With a BB....the equivalent of another person setting right behind you.

The extra 2.5 cubic feet of tank would have to project down into the chassis due to fiberglass clearance issues. There would exhaust pipe heat issues, not to mention fuel sending unit depth modifications (tricky). You would definitely need a panoramic view rear mirror. lol

I'd go another route...cam...injection. The thought of another twenty gallons behind me makes me nervous. :cry

Um.....what's the difference if you have 20 or 40 gallons of gas sitting behind you? Gas is gas, regardless the quantity and will ignite in a rear end collision if the tank is ruptured.

I think Budman had a point on being less expensive to fill up. I was just curious - no doubt there is little room back there - but if you could get another 5-8 gallons - that would be nice. ......sure wouldn't want to be autocrossing with that bigger tank - thats for sure.

I do have to say that with the suburban - when I am driving it - I work so close to home, a fillup can last me 3+ weeks.

If it's baffled and protected from exhaust heat (or w/ sidepipes) what's the problem? There's nothing requiring you to fill the whole thing if you don't want to, so maybe just put in the usual $20 of gas unless you're going on a long trip and want the extra range.

...the baffling would be a good idea and running the lowest amount of fuel for autocrossing is always best. Sure would be nice for the long trips though!

I've been thinking that if you got rid of some storage space... you could probably do it by moving the rear wall of the storage comartment forward.

Or building some saddle bags that lay down flat under the floor boards like on some of the vans and what not :cheers:

You're looking at the wrong end of the horse! If you want to pass gas stations, do 1 of 2 things. Or do both:

#1: Overdrive transmission.
#2: Fuel injection.

Both are much less invasive than enlarging the gas tank. And they solve the original problem instead of putting a bandaid on the symptoms!

Not to go onto a different subject..... It has been a while since I posted , but over the years, I have discussed getting rid of my 427/435 and going LS-1/6 or now - LS-2. These options also allow for lighter wieght and O/D trans and Computer conmtrol. And it is a good idea and has meit.

With these discussions, I have been guided that I could do the 427 with major HP and still do pump gas. (roller cam, alum heads,,,etc)

The thing that seems to help out is the Gear Vendor opportunity. That would mean I could keep my BB and Turbo 400 and just add the gearvendor. Alll this is 'dreaming' right now - of course all equates to the $$$$, but I am still moving forward with the excitement of planning it all.

Yeah - the 44 gal tank is a pie in the sky - but when you have it all (BB that is) :cool: you tend to want more :cheers: :cheers: :cheers: :D :D :D :party: :party: :party:

I drove a box van with twin tanks and always filled both when I needed to figuring I'd get a bunch of miles in between stops.At the same time I almost always baught a Coke and had to stop shortly there after to relieve myself.So much for miles between tankups.

I'd be a little concerned for the added weight effecting the handling and braking.What's the point of a sports car if you have to drive it like a semi?
