Sealant for rear main seal and oil pan gasket.
I plan to change the rear main seal and oil pan gasket on a 1980 corvette.
I purchased the GM 4 piece oil pan gasket and the 2 piece rear main seal.
What type of sealant should be placed between the 2 pieces of the main seal
and between the end and side pieces of the oil pan gasket?
I currently have two sealants from Permetex: Aviation form a gasket
and Super 300 form a gasket sealant. Both are in bottles with brush on
applicators. Will one of these work or do I need a thicker sealant sold
in a tube?
Also does some one know the torque spec for the rear bearing cap?

Hey,
The stuff you have is OK I used the old Indian Head from Permetex and it worked great. I would only use the thick stuff if pan is aftermarket and it is not a good fit. The rear main cap is put to 65 foot pounds and the oil pump goes to 50 to 55 foot pounds.

Felpro says not to put any sealant on the seal ends. Thats because the seal is a self vulcanizing material.
Once they come in contact thats all they need.
Sealant will just mess them up.
They go on to show just the metal area being sealed with an anerobic sealant. I use Hymolar but the Permatex should work ok.
Also if your seal kit comes with a plastic spoon, use it to prevent shaving the back of the seal as you put it in. Real important to prevent oil from leaking around the backside fo the seal.
Auotzone carrys Felpro rear main seal kits that have everything you need

Thanks for your reply. Are you saying not to use any sealant on the rear
main oil seal where the two halves come together? But use some on the
side of the gasket where it meets the bearing cap?
If I mess the seal up and have to purchase another one. I noticed in
Auto Zone's and Advance Auto Parts web sites that they offer single and
double lip Fel Pro gaskets. Which type does a 1980 use?

Yes that's what I'm saying. Only put sealant on the metal cap. The instruction sheet will point this out. The rubber seal in Felpro and GM seals are made of a self Vulcanizing material.
No sealant is necessary on the rubber seal ends where the halves butt togeather.
I've never used a double lip seal so I would'nt know about those
