Default Considering an Auto trans swap. Opinions?

Hey all, While browsing through my summit catalog yesterday I noticed that TCI Offers a 700R4 trans for somewhat short change. I love my 6 spd but would really rather have an auto, For one the wife wants to drive the car once in awhile and the fact that I can only drive for so long before the clutching starts to affect my back (herniated disc)

My first question is how big of a project am I looking at here? The 77 was originally an auto car which was changed to a ZF6 and LT1. Obviously I would need to relocate the crossmember again , but would I also need to get a new driveshaft? Now alot of this would be farmed out as I do not have access to a lift and I am not yanking the entire motor and trans just to do the swap.

Also what is my ZF6 and clutch assembly etc worth on the market right now? It's in great shape (except for the bubba'd shifter) leaks no fluids and shifts fine. The price I can get for the used trans and clutch assembly will dictate my desire to get into this deeper.

Thanks for any opinions folks!!

I am also considering an auto trans swap. Have a PG in my 66 and considering the 700R4. Everything is very positive. Check out their website. http://www.700R4.com . Bill

If you have the LT1 computer you should be able to run a newer trans (4L60E or something like that) which is basically the elec version of the 700r4 but a little beefier.

I am running an Accell/DFI computer at the moment (Gen 6 I believe) of which I have NO CLUE on how to tune or use. Why he (the previous owner that did the swap) didn't stick with the stock computer I have no idea.

Thanks for the link!!

That's a better deal than TCI's!! and it does look pretty straight forward except for the computer and TPS

I have a Gen 6 in my formula, it has limited control over the t/c and none over an elec tranny.

I've heard that you can use a stand-alone computer for a 4L60E conversion from a diesel pickup. I would look at street and performance catalog too. But the later 700R4/4L60 are pretty strong and would not require as much wiring.

I would consider the 200-4R, also. It fits right where a TH400 would go.
I think you need the TH350 driveshaft - but no cutting to size like the 700-R4.

Here is someone in Ebay that thinks the ZF-6 package is worth $1999,
another at $2200 - but you can get the whole 89 vette for $2500. :

well after looking at 700r4.com they have bolt in mount kits setup for the swap, my main concern is the computer setup and TPS,

And hell those are some grat prices for the ZF6!! Too bad even I think they are unrealistic LOL I was thinking maybe around 1300 for the whole setup would be a fair price.

The thing is how much it would cost to have the work done, unless someone wants to make some money, beer and food off me and help me do the conversion LOL

I don't know. Someone was saying that a ZF6 for their Corvette would run about $1500.

Well if you could just get an EZ TV Cable from Bowtie and skip the computer. Thats what most people have and it works very well.

Also do some research on the trans crossmembers. Simply redrilling a TH400 is possible, but some people have had problems. They tend to position the tail a little higher which changes driveline geometry and can cause your fan to bottom out in the shroud. I have a BTO crossmember which is really sweet because it allows for more exhaust clearance & height.

As for BTO tranny's, most people had good luck but a few (including me) have experienced problems. Just shop around...

The Gen 6 will control the t/c, you can set a minimum rpm and throttle postion to lock it.
