Art Carr Racing 700R4 - The best ever!
I have been very abusive to my 700R4 and I felt bad enough about it on Saturday to take it to my friends shop and go for the tranny flush, new oil, and filter. I have only done this once before and that was like a month or so after installing it. Which was recommended by Art Carr. At that time I put in the 14 or 16 quarts and that metal treatment called Energy Release.
When I first got this tranny rebuilt 4 years and 30,000 miles ago I was very disappointed when I went to pick it up at the local Art Carr Racing tranny shop. I talked to them about wanting this and that and never ask a price. The cost word never even came up about my transmission rebuild. I got the best parts with their 850 hp rating. Well the bill for the tranny was something like $2200 and an additional $1200 for the TQ converter with tax. I told them that I could have got a nice 5-6 speed for that much money. It was just another live and learn!
Before I could get my Vette on the rack I helped him do a 2000 Suburban the tranny had slightly darker oil and when we pulled the pan it was full of black clutch silt and the flat magnet was covered with fine metal flake. I told my buddy **** that’s nothing, I’ve pulled my Vette pan in the past when I had hopped up TH350’s and I would have busted chunks of metal in the bottom and the oil looked like a dark red metal flake.
Before we lift it. My buddy pulls the dip stick to look at the oil and it looks new and he ask me if it is. I told him the only time I’ve added any was when I put in the brass ½ inch inner diameter adapters on the tranny case and ½ inch Teflon stainless steel braided quick disconnect lines and the biggest tranny cooler B&M sells. It’s also ½ inch NPT fittings.
I’ve done 1000’s of full on power shifts at 7000 rpm where it’s just smoking my 28X10.5 slicks or 315 rear street tires. I always wondered how it was handling the Line lock burn outs at the drag strip when my rears are doing 85 mph and just blowing smoke of them. Not as good as the smoke show that GrandSport does, but close. I thought for sure that 1000’s of miles at the road racing track had to hurt also. Things like yanking it from 3-2 while braking for a turn and it throws the back end out sideways. I’ve gone through several sets of U-joints and destroyed a bigger ½ shaft
I couldn’t believe it! Nothing, no clutch dust. Just a hair of film on the flat magnet. I’m so impressed with this tranny. I have never had a transmission last this long even with my lower powered motors. All that billet steel was worth every penny. My case is a K25 casting which has the thicker bell housing. I also run it without a dust cover for additional cooling and access to my SFI flex plates.
Thank You Art Carr Racing Trannys!

George I went the economy route and had a local transmission shop known for it's transmission build my 700R4 for $1300 with me supplying the case . I think it last about a month before I had to pay another $500 for warranty, That lasted about a week. This time they covered it, I babied the next one and got a couple of months. The last time it was $1000 and I sold it before installing it. This did not include the 4 torque converters that I destroyed the welded fins on.
Glad you are having good luck but you need a 5 speed.LOL

Should I add that metal treatment called Energy Release to my fresh built TH400 when I put it in?

Wow it sounds like they put together quite a transmission George
I'm having a small problem getting my 5spd into 2nd with full power-on shifts (pushing in the clutch and letting off the gas) right now. After hitting the 7000 rev limiter before the end of the 1/4 in 3rd I was wishing I had an auto in it's place I may just throw an 8000 rpm pill into the MSD so I can go thru without having to shift into 4th

Smoked tires - I'll make you a deal - Flex plate to shortened drive shaft for a 5 speed with petals
Norval - your probably on the edge even with a 850 hp AC tranny
STPMan - I swear by Energy release. I have it in my motors tranny and rear ends. From my days of pit crewing in sprint cars. When a car would come in from hot laps before qual runs the discussion would cover gearing among other things. Hildibrand quick change rear gears are just basically two straight gears and a solid Axil assembly. The rear tires are different diameter so the loads on those gears behind 700 hp are terrific. The 90W-120 oil would be smoking hot when you swapped the gears out and you had to use burn proof gloves. Add ER and The gears were so much cooler that you could handle them in a short period of time.
It's a metal treatment not a lubercant

That's good to hear. I've got one that's been sitting in my garage in the case for 3 months now waiting for AR Racing to build my motor. Got it and their 9.5 billet converter (3000 stall, lockup) for $2100 to the terminal.

Mr. Art Carr sold out to his businness partners and quit. Years later he decided to come out of retirement, but couldn't use his own name because of selling all his interest in the original businness.
I believe that there are probably some other great and inovative transmission builders out there. It all comes down too, you pay for what you get!

Will the real mr art carr stand up?
I've got no idea!
I only deal with http://www.artcarr.com
because they were just down the street from my office. They since packed up and moved to Texas and for a couple of years left the sales office here.

Give them a call and if they won't ship direct get back to me and I will help you out. I have a friend that bought a distibutership and he travels selling it at circle track races along with Race fuels.
