Default Dual Snorkel Air Cleaner for '76

Today I picked up an interesting item. It is an air cleaner base with a chrome top and two snorkels instead of one. There was also two plastic pieces (one for over the rad the other for the passenger inside fender?). The fender plastic piece has a square end on one end. The fibre ducting (in excellent condition) was also included. The air cleaner even came with a paper air filter and a pretty new looking air breather.

Is this stock for 1976? I noticed that there is a diagram of it in the Corvette Central catalogue. However, the only piece not available (in the catalogue) is the dual snorkel cleaner. Tha catalogue claims that it's for a 1976-1981 L82. I don't what I'm going to do with it as my single set up is OK. Does anyone know where this is from? I've seen other L82's without it.

It was added in '79 or something around there and it ended up with a 5hp gain according to the ratings. I'd be more exact, but I can't find my Corvette black book after my sister "cleaned up" my computer area two months ago.

You really cant see it but the passenger side snorkel runs under all the a/c lines and water lines to the collecter mounted on the right hand fender..hope this helps. Joe!

That is an '81 ONLY air filter housing set-up. '81's came stock with the chrome lid and that "blue" charcol "inner" filter. That small tube on the left side of the housing also makes this unit unique to '81---'78-'80 Corvettes DID NOT have this small tube. You could probably "adapt" this to your car.

Is that a Cutlass W30 behind you? Circa '68 to '70? Got a pic of that?

I have the stock '76. It is a single snorkel that looks to be about the same size as one of yours. It has a flexible line that attaches to an intake that is mounted on top of the radiator in the middle.

Other than that, my only option seems to be an open face breather.

The dual snorkel first appeared in 1978 on the L-82. It was adapted to both the L-48 and L-82 for 1979 and 1980. As Paul noted, the 1981 with that small sidepipe (what you have) was unique to that year. I would imagine that had something to do with the introduction of the Computer Command Control (CCC) system first installed in 1980 for the California LG-4 305cid engine and ubiquitous in 1981. In 1982 things went cross-fire. This is my former 1979 L-82.

It was stock on my 79, just not exactly the same, i had no blue inner charcoal filter, as well as a flat black top, the overall structure was the same, i decided to part it out to get a drop base air cleaner to fit my performer rpm and speed demon carb.

I tore off mine for the same reason on my 79 L-82. All the stock stuff is somewhere in my garage gathering dust.

You should put it up for sale in the for sale section of the C3 forum, i got $70 (maybe more, dont remember anymore) for my setup, and the person that gets it also saves about a $100, since a new setup from ecklers costs a ton of $$$.

I'd probably buy it.
