Default Fusible link at starter. Replace or bypass?

I'm troubleshooting a starter issue and noticed that the (starter's)fusible link insulation, although intact, appears "gooey" from all the years of gunk/heat/oil exposure. Can I replace/bypass the link with matching gauge wire or must I install new?

Where the heck does one obtain a fusible link?

Replace. They can be bought at any auto parts store. Probably easier to find at NAPA or CarQuest.

Id replace it with a push-in fuse. Use the right guage wire and the right fuse. Fusible links burn and can cause fires. Fuses wont.

Is it OK to have a fuse that is exposed (as it would be hanging near the starter)?
