What is the slip yoke and what does it do?

transmission yoke. It's the internal splined thing that holds the u joint from the drive shaft, the slip yoke slips (slides) into the transmission tail onto the splined output shaft.

Hi
You replace them when the Tranny leaks out of the back due to slip yoke having wear marks from the seal or corrosion. You also replace this when you install a different tranny having a different number of teeth. ( TKO = 31 tooth, T56 = 30 or 31 Tooth, depending on version etc ).
For noise, the U-joints are getting replaced as those have the bearings. The slip yoke is just a fixed connection.
It slides in and out of the tranny to counteract slight lenght changes of the car due acceleration or bending of the chassis.
Noise comes from bearings, should not be the slip yoke.
