F/S 1970 vert BB 4 spd in NJ
As some of you know, I got laid off 2 1/2 years ago, and have not been able to find a full time job. With one kid in college, and another that is a Junior in High School, it occurred to me and my wife that if I can get a good price for my car, it would make sense to sell it. I will emphasize that this is not a fire sale, so if you are looking for the bargain basement, it isn't here.
Anyway, another poster was looking for a car that sounded almost exactly like mine, so I offered it to him in his thread. There has been enough interest that I think it makes sense to give my car its own thread.
Here is the picture and description from the other thread:
1970 454, 4 spd, 2 tops, AC PS PB AM/FM Stereo, tilt/tele. Bridgehampton Blue painted in 2008, paint still in excellent condition.
Frame has no identifiable rust. I had one of the kick panels off last year, and there was a minimal amount of scale around the body mount, but pretty clean compared to others I have seen.
Vin derivative on the engine block and trans stamps matches the VIN on the body. Rear end has the right codes. Originally a vinyl interior car, presently has leather seats in OK condition, and non-original door panels. The rest of the interior is in very good shape. The console is presently apart because I had an electrical issue with the HVAC system, and the front fiber optics did not work. Of course, if anyone was interested in the car, I would finish those repairs before showing the car. The door buzzer, and the AM band on the radio do not currently work. I don't know of anything else on the car that is not working (once the front fiber optic repair is finished that is). That means even the clock works, and keeps time well!
It does not have it's original Rochester carburetor, a Holley double pumper was on the car when I purchased it, and is still there. I have removed the starter motor that came with the car, and replaced it with a high-torque mini-starter. I have the starter that came out, and although it is the right part, the codes suggest my car did NOT leave the factory with that starter. When I bought the car, the spare tire capability had been removed. I have restored the capability, but did not pay attention to date stamps. The wheel for the spare was new 6 years ago, the jack I bought at Corvettes at Carlisle; it is the right part but I believe (from memory) it has a '73 date on it.
Although I do not have any docs, before I purchased it, I got an inspection from a knowledgeable NCRS member who described the look of the stamp pad and other numbers as "perfect". It also has the correct "fingers fan" that was only on '70-'72 big blocks with AC, and the correct fan clutch with matching date. He checked many other part numbers and dates, and within my memory, everything checked out except the stuff I have called out here. It has the correct HD rear end (caps, not u-bolts), and everything else a big block car is supposed to have.
The car has been a reliable nice-day driver for the nearly 7 years I have owned it. I have driven it about 1000 miles per year, including going to Corvettes at Carlisle in it twice, a 375 mile round trip. When the currently partially completed repairs are finished, I will have no hesitation taking it on trips like that again. The tires were new when I bought the car, so they only have about 7000 miles on them, but they are 7 years old now. They still look great, and have a ton of tread. The E-brake was weak when I bought the car, so I rebuilt it with the stainless steel parts and it works fine now. The original points ignition has been replaced with a Mallory infra-red unit. The TCS system has been disabled. These things were done by previous owners.
The soft top was "new" when I bought the car, but the installation was terrible. I have adjusted/fixed it as best I can, and it "works" as in I got caught in a light rain once and it was reasonably weather-proof. But, if I was to take this car on a long (like cross country) trip, I would replace the top again to really make it "right". In other words, it works, but really isn't up to my standards. I haven't replaced it simply because I only drive the car on nice days, so it is a low priority.
The hard top is in great condition mechanically, and was painted at the same time as the car, so it looks perfect. When I bought it, the weather stripping was beat, so I have never had it on the car. I have the new weather stripping for it ($250 kit), which I can install, or send with the car if someone buys it, buyer's choice.
Basically, if you are looking for a NCRS champion / trailer queen, this one is not currently anywhere close to that kind of condition. However, I have every reason to believe this car did leave St. Louis as a big block car with its current drive train. The modifications to it were done primarily to make the car more reliable. It has always been a fun car to drive with tons of torque.
My asking price is $55,000. I can be somewhat negotiable on that, but I will not even consider offers below $50,000.

AC was a "nice to have" when I was looking for my next C3 and found this one.
and FWIW: I am in your LS5 thread, post #11!

I had a lot of pictures of the car, but my Image Shack account crapped the bed and I don't know where the original pictures are. As soon as I can get a day to move the car outside, I'll try to take some new ones.
The only reason I have the one picture in the OP is it was once my avatar.

Hi PK, great looking '70 LS5 Convertible! I know it must be hard to part with your car, but you have your priorities in order. I've owned my '71 for 40 years now and I know my time is coming.
Nice write up in the ad too, looking forward to seeing more photos.
Best of luck with the sale.

Yes, hard to think about parting with it. But with the way Hagerty and Grundy do their Collector car insurance, I have to have one car for every driver in the family, plus the classic. My son is already 16 and eligible for a permit. When he gets his license, that would mean a mind-boggling fifth car at my little box of a house.

I'm hoping it warms up a little later this week like the weatherman predicts so I can get back to the garage and work on the fiber optics some more.
