Default Seats for Big Dudes

Since it looks like I'll be keeping the C4 until the C24 comes out,
I'm looking into making the vette a little more comfortable. One of
my ideas is to change the seats in the car to something that allows a little more room.
My car is an '88 with sport seats. Obviously, I need to find a seat that will fit in the seat well properly, but I need to get something that offers
a little lower seating profile as well as allowing me to sit as far back as I can. Sort a Corvette with "Relaxed-Fit."
If you're wondering, I'm 6'3" @ 310lbs. My knees sometimes rub the lower part of the dash and my head hits the cross bar of the top.
I've been considering something out of maybe an '85 camaro and having them covered, but I don't know if they'll fit down in the seat well. getting them to mount into the car is no problem as I can fab the mounts if necessary.
Anyone got any suggestions?

My first suggestion would be to replace the sport seat with a standard seat. I understand the sport seat was a little more..uh, shall we say...confining, than the standard unit.

Other than that, you're on your own. The problem is that there just isn't much room between the center tunnel and the sills on the C4....there's no room for a wider seat.

I am actually considering the same thing here. I am 6'8" 230 lbs and I have a '90 with the sport seats. The lower seat bolster is way too restrictive, as I hit my leg against the right side while I drive. I drove my friend's '92 the other day (with standard seats) and it was WAY more comfortable to drive. I'm now considering just swapping out the lower part of the seat.....does anyone know if the lower bolsters are interchangeable between the standard and sport seats? this may be a place to start for you as well.

good luck

You all may want to check out the later C4 seats. First offered in 1994, they are wider and flatter then the earlier sport seats.

Get them custom upolstered so they are thinner then stock.

Great suggestion here. My '96 had pretty wide seats and were extrmely comfortable.

Dayum, dude

Is it possible to use a thinner foam on the bottom and reduce/eliminate the side supports? (Sounds like question about diapers, huh?)
I would imagine a competent upholstere could do it. That should give these guys enough room. Hopefully when I recover mine I can lose the sheepskins and my head wont hit the support going over bumps

that's why I suggested the use of the later seats. They are just wider and less tight.

I would suggest the later C4 seats also, they won't look out of place and are a lot "roomier"

EDIT:

Way more room

God, I'm the smallest one here. I'm 5'4" and 120 lbs. Fiancee is also 5'4" like me but 105 lbs. We can fit in the Vette on both seats equaling the weight of a larger size typical adult male.

do the later C4 seats bolt right in? Also, can I just replace the lower part, without replacing the entire seat?

I don't know much about the hardware part of this thread, however, I have sport seats in my 96.
The seat seems to be more flat than the standard and the back rest is wider as well.
Super comfortable seat. I'm 6'1 210lbs

1) I have the sport seats in my 95 and I actually think that the sport seats (lower portion) are wider & flater than the standard seats.

2) I do not believe that you can replace just the bottom. I think that you have to replace the whole seat frame.

3) I've seen them for sale here in the parts section. You might also try www.vette2vette & see if you feel his prices are reasonable.

I agree with Bogus, Those newer C4 Seats are WAY more comfortable . I sat in a 1990 that had this done in the showroom at Central Corvette in Toronto. I'm 5"11 , 270. NO i don't eat cookies just lots of steak !

I'm just glad the power seat switches in my 87 are built into the centre console instead of taking up space on the seat sides.

I'M 6'8" @ 230 LBS TOO. I could get in my '87 convertible and drive it, but only if i leaned way to the pass. side. No way I could take the car any distance. I got one Kirkey aluminum seat from the Summit Racing Catalog, and a cloth cover. I moved the seat all the way against the rear bulkhead and bolted it right down using the two rear studs that mount the stock seat. I now have a ton of head room, and plenty of leg room.
The only problem is the pass. seat is Saddle Tan, and leather and the driver seat is black, cloth. A lot of people look inside the car and don't even notice. Also very tough to get into and out of. I was going to install two Kirkey seats, but if you're not 6'8" you can't see out over the dash. (wife is 5'5") With my new seat arrangement I am quite litterally sitting on the floor. But it is very comfortable for me!

I have the same problem. I'm 6'5", 260 with long legs. I've wondered if simply doing away with the brackest and direct-mounting the stock seat to the floor as far back as possible would improve my head and leg room. looking at your post, i'm beginning to suspect it will. Do you have any pics of it?

And I suspect you are right. Just be prepared for many hours of fabrication before you get it all just right....
