Default Key chime

My chime for the ignition system goes off sometimes when I insert my key. Is it safe to spray contact cleaner in there to clean it up?

You mean when you insert the key you get chimes with the door open and the engine off?

If so, its suppose to do that.

If your chimes don't work, give a rap on the top of the dashboard above the A/C vents. That's what Gordon Killebrew told me to do.

Obviously it's only a temporary fix.

Where is the relay for the chimes?
How hard is it to replace?

Jet,
Sometimes I hear the chimes and sometimes I don't.

Yeah I wasn't exactly sure what you meant by "goes off" so I just wanted to ensure we were on the same page.

Wow this thing is much more complicated than you would imagine. FYI its called the Key Reminder.

Depending on what it is exactly doing you can make several adjustments by increasing or descreasing the key warning switch contact gap, among other items. Let me list the possible scenario's and go from there.

- Key warning switch continues to operate with key out but stops when driver door is closed.

- Key warning switch does not sound with key in lock cylinder and the driver's door open.

- Key warning switch continues to operate with key in lock cylinder with driver's door open or closed and ceases when key is removed.

Those are the mechanicals, the electricals are:

- Key in ignition warning does not chime.

Does the other audibles work: lights on and seat belt?

If they do there will be some jumpering required to test. If they don't then we will need to test the tone generator.

Let's start from here. Lani

Oh missed your last question. It appears that with some minimal tools you can make adjustments. Lets see where your at first, it may not require replacing anything.

Ok, opened door and security light and interior lights came on. Put key in ignition and nothing, turned key to 'ON' position and Door Ajar, seatbelt lights came on, no chimes.

Should note also, that when I leave the lights on and door is open the lights on reminder does not sound either. This has never worked since I have owned the car.

Sounds like the problem is in the tone generator. Here is a picture from the service manual for the fault isolation steps. I'm trying to get a better image of the two schematics and will post them. This should get your started.

I'll edit this post and add them as soon as I get a better image, the first one's weren't clear enough.

Randy I didn't forget about you, I'm just having some issues getting clear images of the schematics. I need to mow the lawn before the rains come. I'll try to get a better well lit image afterwards and upload it for you. On those mentions in the procedures about excercising CCM manual diag, they are done using the diagnostic codes its just another mode page, it can be explained if that is needed.

Did you try banging on top of the dash?

See my reply above, it is not a joke.

The relay is located under the dash behind where the A/C vents are, that's why Gordon says to give it a bang there.

mine does exactly the same thing, sometimes it chimes and sometimes it don't. everything works perfect and the chime has always been annoying anyways. i will try the bang as mojo wrote. not that i care about the chime but banging has my curiosity if it really works.

I thought there was a tech tip about taking it out and resoldering 2 of the internal connections but couldn't find it. From what I remember there are 2 soldered connections inside the tone generator that sometimes resoldering will make it work again.

I would check for voltage at the connector first.

There is the mechanical side adjustments when it is intermittent if the contact points are out of tolerance. Its a bit difficult to describe and it really requires the manual. Maybe later I'll try to capture those images.

You might try Mojo's suggestion too.

This post got me thinking. I thought everything on my car worked, but I get no chime if I leave the lights on or if the door is open and the keys are in the ignition. I've looked cover to cover in my owners manual and don't see any info on audible warnings. Can I assume that all 91 vette's have this feature?

I don't know about 91's. I think there were more features added in 93, like PKE but I can't imagine chimes not having been there since what maybe the 84 models?

Maybe someone more familiar can chime in (no pun intended LOL).
