5w-30 mobil 1 too light???
I just changed my oil in my 95 with 5w-30 mobil 1 and noticed a new oil leak coming from the front around the opti area. I didn't know the weight of oil I took out since I only had the vette for a month. Tell me what you guys think... THANKS, Bob , Pgh. Pa.

It *could* be that the previous owner (a.k.a asshat if so) used regular old dino oil instead of the Mobil 1 Synthetic. When you put in the synthetic, boom!, instant oil leak.
But more than likely, the leak was alread there and you just happened to notice it.

Mobil 1 5W30 is the perfect oil for car.
It did not cause the leak.... but be forewarned, fora car with a history of leaks they might worsen as the detergency of Mobil 1 will remove gum and combustion deposits in your engine that may be hiding/slowing a pre-exsiting leak

5w30 is fine, 10w30 would be just as good. Its not the weight thats the issue.
The synthetic tends to remove deposits inside the engine and so has the ability to find any weak links in gaskets and seals. If it didnt have syn in it before, the syn will go to work getting out the deposits. You need synthetic in that engine anyway, so it shouldve always been in there.
Changing to dino again won't fix the leak, but changing to a thicker oil might decrease it. 15w50 is available for M1 synthetic.
Only real fix is to replace whatever seal is leaking.

I use M1 5-30 for the winter oil change, then the other three spring, summer, and fall I use M1 10-30. I doubt the oil caused the leak. (Oh I change my oil first day of each season.)
The leak your referring to seems to be fairly common. I have a similar one, its not a serious leak just requires some minor clean up during the oil change. It gets a portion of the pan moist. I have looked and looked at this leak and it appears to be the oil pan gasket that starts to weep where it makes the turn for the crank shaft. I just tried snugging the two bolts right next to the passenger side corner, and will check it in a week to see if that resolved it. If not I'm not too worried as its a very minor weep. I'll just put an oil pan gasket on my list of items to do in the future.
