Default R134 conversion

What do I need to convert my 85 to R134A? Who makes a kit for a reasonable price?

I saw the conversion kit at Walmart this week and as I recall was quite reasonable. The kit came with all you will need including guages and gas.

I had thought about having mine changed over to R134A this Summer. I talked to my mechanic about it, and he told me if the system wasn't originally designed for R134A, that it wouldn't get as cold as an R12 unit. Mine didn't need anything, but to be recharged. 1 can of R12, plus labor $212, a little less than the $275-$300 they wanted for the conversion.

The choice is yours, but I like the coldness of the R12.

R12 has a lower boiling point that is why it gets much colder the down side they do not make R12 in the US any more so it is Very expensive and hard to find it is also hard on the ozone layer(thats why they ouit making it!)

I had my system converted to R-134 back in '98 when my ac compressor seized. It's blows nice and cold. It seems to work better than the ac in my wifes Contour SVT.

You can still get R12 at Autozone and Kragen. The only thing is you need a license, which costs $20.00. R12 goes for about $10 a can if you shop around. do a search on ebay for R12 and you'll see what I mean.

I thought they quite making it because the patent Dupont had expired and the Government throw them a bone and let tem make 134A (which by the way is also alegedly bad for the ozone).

134A is 14 bucks a can isn't it? Hard to believe that R12 is less. Either way, I saw an upgrade kit on Eckler's that comes with a compressor a receiver dryer and O-rings and it's $400. They're proud of their hoses too. Problem is, is that I don't know what all is wrong with the system since it hasn't worked since I've owned the car. I might just get whatever O-rings are required and fill it up with 134A and see what happens.

Good move. You can get an "O" ring set for about $5.00.

I just converted my wife's 91 Formula over to 134A. The 134 costs $7/can at wallyworld.
If you'd like I can send or post the proceedure I used and the place where I got the parts.

If you keep your system in good shape R-12 is no problem at all. Here in LV since the price of 134 went up there isn't too much difference in price between 134 and R-12.
