96 Grand Sport - LT 4 question
Can you guys educate me on the Grand Sport - I thought that the GS was Blue exterior/red interior only. Is this a true statement? I am looking at a 96 Polo Green "Grand Sport" on the internet (no stripes, saddle interior, standard wheels). I thought that was a misprint/mislead, but then the photo of the engine compartment shows "Grand Sport" in red letters.
Is this a Polo Green Convertible with the LT-4 option, or is it indeed a "Grand Sport"?
Thanks.

The LT-4 engine, only available in the `96 model year, is also known as the "Grand Sport" engine. So that label plate on the intake is correct.
It wont be too long before owners of actual Grand Sports show you pics.

It is not a grand sport, it is an lt4 car only. GM put the gs throttle body on all lt4s, which causes people to think that the cars are also grand sports. I had to argue with a guy before I bought mine that his black lt4 six speed car was not a grand sport no matter what the plastic cover on his throttle body said.

The GS was an appearance package like the CE... Blue w/White strip, special black wheels, and badges... Oh and a different VIN sequence if memory serves correctly...
Check out the GS registry, I think you'll learn more than you wanted to...

You are looking at a LT4 car they have a grand sport motor. LT4 cars all have manual trannys. A GS is admiral blue with a white stripe down the middle and red hash marks on the front driver side fender. The interior color is open to any color the GS only came with a 6 spd tranny

There were 1000 GSs made. 849 coupes, 151 verts (someone confirm my numbers!).
There was only 1 option - red or black interior.
The GS was made to honour the 1963 Grand Sport. Five were made as part of an all out racing project by Zora... it ended after five were built, when 199 were planned. There was a sixth built, however, it was burned to the ground at the GM proving grounds in Milford, MI.
This was during the tail end of the AMA ban on racing... what a crock that was. And GM enforced it. The other five were saved because they were already in the hands of privateers.
All five had special aluminum 377ci small blocks (allow my to qualify - I THINK they were supposed to be aluminum, my memory is telling me that they had problems with the castings, so they may have been iron), with four Weber sidedrafts on a special laydown intake manifold. Later, these cars got early prototype 427s in them. They had speed, were about 1000 lbs lighter then a stock Vette of the day, but didn't have enough built to qualify as a production vehicle, so they were stuck in prototype classes, and could not compete.
