Default Need a new starter, WWC4GenDo?

I here GM quality has went down the toilet, so should I go with Duralast from Autozone or stick with GM?

Check around and see if there's a reputable rebuilding shop in your area. If so, consider taking your dead starter to them for rebuild, and stuff it back in the car.

Be well,

When mine goes, I'm purchasing one of the lighter gear reduction units that resist heat soak.

I've thought about this, but I'm not sure if I want to go this way or not..

I'd get a new starter, not a piece of crap from Autozone. The original starter is a Denso, and thats what I would stick with. Your starter is already a ministarter.

Buy the 88-91 starter, its half the weight of the 84-87 and nearly half the size.

It won't require anything more than any other ministarter to make it work, shimming and maybe some wiring.

Maybe you have someone locally that can build your old one.

Here in TN/GA there is a gentleman (charlie) that hand builds "all things electrical" for any under the hood motor component of any brand. You can even custom order. He built my Lexus alternator for $40 3 years ago... still the best I have ever had.

The thing that gets most starters is brushes. An easy fix if you are into that kind of stuff. Otherwise an electrical shop is the answer.

And your starter is almost exactly identical, both made by Denso. I would only go with the original piece, I bought one from TLD for $185 and its better than any crap you'll get from Autozone.

Never buy electrical components from places like that.

He has an 86 with the 20lb starter, which is why I replied directly to him. My 1st response above was to you.

I bought a new starter from Advanced Auto Parts about 2 1/2 years ago for $30.00. It was a rebuilt unit. Can't remember the brand, but it was not Bosch or AC Delco.

Some say there junk. Well mine's worked perfect for years and the best part is I only paid $30.00 for it.

And you wont have to mess around with the possibility of needing to shim it up which is often needed for proper alignment with a new one.

Got mine rebuilt with a one year warranty and at half the price of a new. I also like the idea that it's O.E.

Delco is listed as the manufacturer for the TLD starter, but its got a Denso label on the side, but good luck finding this starter anywhere else. Maybe NAPA or a dealership will have it.

Yeah, they'll also want $300 bucks for an OEM starter.

The $185 one from TLD is OEM.
