C4 Money Pits?
I have heard a few people on this forum reference C4s as "money pits". Is this the case? I have not had any real problems with my C4. Are the C4s money pits? Do they break more than C5s or C6s? I guess time will tell on the latter question, but what do you guys think of the aforementioned statement?

Well, parts are becoming harder to find and more expensive. I don't consider my 87 a money pit (not compared to my boat) as long as I keep it stock, you can dump as much money as you want into mods, therefore creating your own pit-but that's a personal choice. And like any other machine-good maintenance usually gives good results.

I'm not going to lie, mine has been a challenge sometime. There is no way in hell I could have owned this car for the last 6 years if I did not do ALL the work myself.
The money for shop repairs would be way too much for me to handle.

I wouldn't call them money pits.
Except for some AC work and an alignment, all the money I have blown on my C4...in over three years...has been for mods; wheels, tires, shocks, PC polisher, covers, racing seats, steering wheels, etc.
As far as maintenance items go; about $60/year not counting oil and filters. The most reliable vehicle I've ever owned and I put 10,000 miles a year on it.
OOps...forgot the $400 for a new windshield....would that be maintenance?? Or just bad luck?

I guess milage is a real multiplier here. Low milage C4s are probably very reliable. Been a long time since mine was a low milage car tho.

Bunch of maintenance items when i bought it, a fuel pump was the only thing that has "gone out". And the alternator. Oh, injectors, EGR, too Rest of it was "throwing "money at a problem due to lack of troubleshooting know-how.

The C4s' are older cars. As with any older car thing break. I do believe, (noone flame me), that if Ford had made the interior, it would probably hold up better! ha

My 87 was low mileage (40s) but was getting up there in age. Other than maintenance and mods/upgrades the only thing it really needed was a replacement VATS decoder. The rest of the money I spent on it could have been deferred to a later date or not spent at all. (Don't let my wife see this! )

I think Corvettes hold up pretty well. I dont like Fords, have you seen all the manufacture recalls on a Mustang? My friend has a '98 Mustang and his intake manifold cracked. Now thats crappy workmanship.

Tune up with labor (for an LT1)=$950.00. I am waiting on my income tax check.
I have also done: replaced atf with new gasket, replaced antifreeze, new back rotor (1), new bezel on back of seat (1), hatch vent, upholstered my other targa top with vinyl, new u-joint (1), a couple of new tires, new trim for inside door handle/power window, touch up paint, and two new tail light housings (mine eventually became loose because of a broken side mount point (plastic)).
That is about it. My vette is a 95 with 107K miles. I am paying for the labor for the tune up shortly. OUCH! $485 big ones. But after all I have done, I would not call my vette a money pit.

The first few years I spent almost nothing. Now I figure something big and a few small things every year. This year it's tires, not wore out just 10+ years old. This is the first of 20+ Vettes I've ever kept so long!!!
Now the Callaway is a whole different matter!! Cost $$$ of NOS pieces of any kind add up fast. Already starting to swear that will never do this again!!

I am thinking about picking up a C4 for a new toy and I would like to know what you get for $1k in the way of a tuneup. I can't decide if I hope that the parts are most of that, or the labor is.....I think the second one...
