Mine came with a alpine unit and i couldn't be happier. The sound is great but i don't know what it sounded like before.
ONE work of advice. don't go with the cheapo brand b/c you get what you pay for. find one with lots of watts per speaker. here is a pic of mine and it is very good. it doesn't match very well but im glad the previous owner put it in.

mine is a 96 and i don't know what the previous owner paid. i think the deck is about $200ish which if i where you i wouldn't go much lower then that. then to install it might cost you around 100. that is just my guess though.
and i really don't notice that it doesn't match if you want it to look stock.

As stated above, go to the Audio section and read the C4 sticky. It is easy to do, and all of the info you need is there. Because you do not have the Bose, it will be even easier for you. If you need any help, just ask some questions, and remember Ebay is your friend when buying a HU and speakers

don't get that POS from Ecklers. It's overpriced junk.
Do yourself a favour and visit the Audio/Electronics section.
Also, check out the C4 Audio FAQ.
That will answer a lot of your questions up front.

I recommend a good Pioneer deck, I found that they offered the best sound in the price range ($150-$200) that I wanted. Sony and Alpine are great too, but cost a little more.

Pioneer or something of the sort is a great way to go. Easy installation too, but I would have it done prof. if you are not familiar just to get all the wiring done right. I have installed endless systems and still am weary about working on my own.

This is one I'm hoping to get within the year...
I figure having the touch screen would be a blast, being able to play DVD's is just a bonus.
I get almost all of my audio stuff from crutchfield.com
