Rim cleaner ruined my rims!!!!!
Bear with me I need to vent....
I get home from work last night and take the vette out for a quick cleaning. I run out of my normal wheel cleaner but I have an extra can of Eagle All Wheel Cleaner, that I have never used before. I spray it on the rims and hose off after the recommended 30 seconds and the stuff ate into rims. It looks like someone used chrome cleaner on aluminum. There is the milky white finish over 3 of my 4 rims. The 4th was safe because I used up my normal cleaner on that one.
I called the company Eagle (Valvoline) shortly after and they said they would send me an aluminum polish. But, I already tried a professional grade aluminum polish from when I re-did the rims last year. It seemed to help a little but I can still see it in the aluminum. What to do???? :(

Tony.96LT4,
No, they were did not have the clear on them. I had stripped the clear and polished them rims late last year.

Mother's and a little elbow grease will have them looking good as new in no time. When you got a non-cleared rim you gotta be super careful about what you spray on them. I use only soap and water to wash them and use Mother's when they begin to dull.

I don't ever use rim cleaner...soap and water works for me...
Its only when you let them get really really dirty that they need some kind of rim cleaner...
Keep em clean and shiny

Years ago, I made the mistake of using that Armor All One Step Wheel cleaner. To my error, I used it on my clearcoated rims (no it was on an Integra ricer, not the `Vette.) Obviously a lot of people made this same mistake because I believe they pulled it from the shelves in 1992 or `93.
That stuff sucked and permanently changed the color of my rims to an ugly goose sh**t green! Yucky! :U

Some of those cleaners have some kind of acid in them. Weather it's a little or alot it's not good 4 chrome or polished wheels.

Re: Rim cleaner ruined my rims!!!!! (35th)
35th is absolutely correct, and unfortunately many people learn this lesson the hard way. :(
Honestly, while everyone is certainly free to do as they wish with their cars, I cringe whenever I read a post about someone using Meguiar's Hot Wheels, Simple Green, etc. on their rims.
Acid containing wheel cleaners are all too common, and they are bad news.
Klasse produces a wheel/rim cleaner that is acid free, and this is what you want. :yesnod:

The best wheel cleaner I've found is a damp cloth. Oh sure it takes a little time but it won't ruin your wheels. If your wheels are so dirty that you can't wipe them clean with a damp cloth then you need to wash them a little more often.

Re: Rim cleaner ruined my rims!!!!! (petek)
I had a similar issue with a cleaner called " green something" can't really remember. I took my vette to be detailed an somehow he got it out. He must have buffed it out and still left the clear coat. Anyway, I used a wheel wax and seemed to help greatly. It really sucks that these cleaners even get out on the market when they are not safe to use. If we wanted stripper, we could get that easy enough. Anyway, I know and share your frustration.

Re: Rim cleaner ruined my rims!!!!! (LLband)
I found that Griots has a GREAT wheel cleaner. It was tested and approved by BBS as being safe on wheels. They made my mom's Discovery's wheels look great, very, very shiny. Dont get the cleaners that you dont have to wipe, those can do lots of damage.
