Center Console self-dye
Hey, all
Has anyone replaced their center console and had to dye the lid themselves?
I have an '84 with Carmine interior, so of course they will send me a black one and a spray can of dye.
I'm just wondering if anyone has done this and how difficult it is.
Thanks!
Jason

People have dyed interior parts. The secret is cleaning and prep. The dye you're getting should detail required prep.
Interior shops say not to dye anything that's freqently touched. To me, the console lid qualifies. Also, since it's leaned on alot, I'd worry about paint (dye) rubbing off or cracking.
For longevity, check into what a local trim shop would charge to cover the lid with matching material. You might even consider dying the sides black and leaving the whole thing black. This combination might end up looking better (from a wear standpoint) down the road.

I would not dye any thing, esp if its something that has often contact.
Why dont you get a used one from vette2vette.com, or a nice cover from redlinegoods.com

My '84 had the same interior color, until I replaced the red leather seat covers with black and the rear carpet with black carpet. I then painted the console lid and sides black (with vinyl paint) and installed a black console cushion on top of the lid. I think it looks great.

I've dyed several parts of my interior including the console lid, looks great and I've had no problem with cracking or wearing off, I must say it's not a daily driver and I do keep it in the garage. I guess it's what your trying to accomplish if your restoring it to a show car then I'd say don't use the dye. If your just trying to make it look good, it's an easy less expensive way to go.

Redline, the supporting vendor that makes custom colored shift boots, now makes console lid covers. I am sure you could get one in your stock color and just recover your console door, or get a custom colored shift boot and console cover.
Good Luck,
