Default Just bought 88 Vette vert want to increase hp suggestions please

I just got a 1988 corvette convertible automatic and was wondering what people here on the forum with knowledge of the l98 engine suggest doing to increse the horsepower. I have about 3k to spend on performance.

Start with the exhaust system. Install longtube headers, remove the pre cats, install a high flow cat and you prefrence of mufflers or eliminators. The price will depend on the mufflers and headers you pick and if you do the work yourself.

Then install a better intake and 1.6 roller rockers.

That is exactly my plan. What kind of numbers are to be expected from such improvements?

I don't see the point. If you don't also include the rotating assembly too, and $12K.

Do it right.

I was in the same boat...if I'm not mistaken, you most likly have a 273 rear (this is what I had). I upgraded to a 373 and it made a huge difference!

More than likely has the 2.59 gears unless he has the performance axle.

If you don't spin the stock lower past 6,000 it will live provided it's still healthy.

i added a some extra insurance with ARP bolts for the rods (and rods re-sized), and ARP studs at the mains, at a cost of about $150 total.

spinning to 6,200 has never been a problem. hell, i bang that every day. here i am 12,000 miles later.

needing rotating assembly, jack it to $12 grand? good grief no!

How about the intake, I'm looking at the super ram or the Mini ram.

Can I expect another 20-25 from that?

So 75HP total? Is that reasonable?

I was giving HR 90 a hard time. Basically he's saying just lift the radiator cap and drop an new engine under it.

Everyone works within a budget, mechanical ability, and desired results.

My 88 Vert has 2.73 gears. Soon to be 3.54s. I would send the plenum to tpis to be ported. Get a set of ASM runners and a bigmouth base manifold. Get catbacks, Check your state regs before you install headers, remove cats or precats. Crane or Comp Pro Magnum 1.6 RRS are a good mod.

Can you tell me how much the new gears improved your ETs? Did you notice a big difference in MPG?

I vote for Cam. Best bang for the dollar. And it makes all the other mods MORE worthwhile. Intake is a big restriction. Go with Baseplate , runners and plenum. And I'm not saying that becuase I do them. Heads on the '88 are not bad. Aftermarket heads are very expensive. Vette exhaust is pretty good too. I gotta say Cam swap. Wish I had done that first. -Mike
