Update. The guy who owns it took it to a trans shop. If the repair is too costly (like $3k) he's willing to let it go cheap. Like $2k or less. Too bad it isnt me considering it!

its worth about $2000 to me- I need a home for an LT1 700R4 drivetrain in my garage. My 84 crossfire runs too nice to pull out so I need another to modify.
84 crossfire-13.66/100mph
93 ruby 13.7/102.5mph
looking for a good C4 body for dedicated race car

The crossfire had MORE power than the early TPI, that's why GM sabotaged the intake manifold by adding 1/2" of aluminum to the runners. 3 or 4 hours with a die grinder will fix that. I can outrun any stock L98 in our club with the few mods that I have. See my sig.
Well, then I guess GM sabotaged the L98 by adding extra-length runners to the intake. :bs

GRX: If you knew the history of the '84, you would know that the TPI wasn't yet ready when the new body style was released, so they used the L83 from the 82 vette. Previous testing showed that the L83 had potentially more power than the L98, and they couldn't release a new highly touted TPI engine with less HP than the previous model, so the L83 intake manifold was cast with narrowed runners to reduce power. Any crossfire owner knows that a little work with a Dremel or air grinder can release the full potential of the crossfire. No stock iron head TPI can compete with a ported crossfire. I have the time slips and trophies to back up my claims.

So YOU are full of :bs

You're right - that's exactly why a stock TPI will run out of steam after 4500 or so; big, long intake runners.

I am amazed that this car took so much abuse in 35,000 miles! Between transmission and bad paint, I would be looking deeper. $3,500 is starting to sound steep. Maybe check a carfax and trace where she's been. Food for thought. :blueangel:
