Color change?-matte black?
I was thinking of painting my vette matte black, like the old hot rods. I want it to be different and I really like the old hot rods. Am I the only one that thinks it 'd be cool? I think it would look tough. I will be getting the torque thrust II wheels as soon as I need new tires. Already got my new carpet and pre-cut heat/sound barrier in the mail. Goin from red to black carpet, but I'm keeping all of the red accents. I just replaced the half-shaft u-joints(fixed my squeaking issue).

Nah man, ya ain't the only one.
I too am seriously looking at the matte finish.
It looks wicked.
However, I am addicted to gloss and shine.
Not sure what to do.

Funny you should mention this...
This post comes at a time when my '85 is at the paint shop getting painted.... matte black! This is also one of those "going backwards" carb conversions as well. I decided on matte black for this Vette to be a companion piece to my matte black Harley, shown here:
I'll post pics of the Vette once we get it back and cleaned up.

It's been done, alot. The idea started as guys who couldn't afford a paint job, used spray cans. Now it's called the retro look. Some people have a different name for it.

Was going to keep my mouth shut because of the ugliness I thought a matte black would cause to a vette.
Then I followed the link to the insane racing site.
WOW!!!!
I REALLY like that!!!!!!
Will be a very nice compliment to the bike RacerX.

To me it looks un-finished, but it doesn't look bad on some cars and bikes. If its not a matte or semi gloss finsh its hard to wash.
Also its a really bad idea to run a car in just a primer finish as it holds on to everything. Thats why the matte finish it has low shine clear coat over the primer to make cleaning it possible and it acts like a sealer.
I wouldn't do it, but Im a painter.

It helps to start with the right color car... in my case, the original color is black already.
It would look to some like it's unfinished, true (waxers come to mind), but the look is more "hardcore performance" to me. The wheels I have are polished, which should offer a little contrast (or I'll use the black Motorsport wheels from my '96).
(EDIT) - just came back from the painter (across the street from my shop) after pulling the clamshell off. We've got the side moldings, mirrors, rear glass, etc. pulled off to make sure the job's done correctly. Everything should be in primer within the next day or so. I'll get some more pics then (I've got a bunch already documenting the bodywork done thus far).

Oh hell yeah. Nothing like a good "stealth" look. I'm going to keep my car gloss black, but I'm going to do a matte black GS racing stripe and transparent red ghost GS fender stripes.
I have a 1/18th model of a 96 in reverse. It's matte black with a gloss black racing stripe. I think it came out pretty cool. I'll post some pics when I get a chance.

eh, to each their own, IMO some fikse wheels would look a whole lot better.
But FYI you dont have to get the permanent paint job done, their is a company that flat blacks the high dollar cars and it is easily reversable.

Thanks a lot guys. I really appreciate the support. Everyone around me wants me to keep it red. after I get the interior done, I'll make my final decision. I'm still leaning towards matte black.

If done right it looks bad ***! Black wheels need to finish the compliment tho. When I lived in Vegas, I saw a sportbike done in line-x truck bed liner and believe it or not it looked KILLER!! Probably heavy as hell but looked tough!! It was a stunt bike tho and covered up imperfections in the body but still looked sweet!
