Most of the aluminum in your engine is cast which is not smooth. You need to have smooth aluminum to get it to shine.

Start with something like Brillo pads. The soap will get rid of grease and oil and the steel wool part will start to bring some smoothness. Then move to 0000 steel wool dipped in Brasso.

Then finish off with some Simichrome polish.

Cast (intake, runners, etc) aluminum youre not going to make look like chrome easily. Youll have to spend some cash on supplies ,make mistakes and a lot of time. In the ling run its cheaper to pay a pro.
No easy way, sorry.

I use Mother's aluminum polish. Yes it even works on the rough cast parts, but it wont look like chrome.

I use Maas - Ace Hardware, most Harley shops, online - even polishes up laminate countertops after wetsanding to remove scratches! Glass - pretty much anything with a solid surface though I wouldn't use it on paint. If you want to, you can apply it with 2000 grit on the coarser stuff. Paper towel is about as coarse as I'll go and I usually just use an old T-shirt or a small orbital buffer - 6 in - or a Dremel works well for tight spots. I wouldn't take a Brillo or a Scotchbrite pad to aluminum! If the metal has a clear on it - like wheels - use Aircraft Stripper (go to a Body Shop supply store and buy the stuff with the strongest warning on it). Stripper also works well on tarnish, but brush it on so don't end up spraying somewhere where you don't want it. You can also remove tarnish with a Copper cleaner or allmost any metal/polishing cleaner for dishes/pots & pans at your local grocery store/Target. Then polish with Maas.

I used Wenol,it's awesome. It comes in a tube like tooth paste. It goes on easy and wipes off easy (the harder you rub the more it shines). I discovered mine at a car show but I think auto parts store sell it now.

Wenol or Simichrome will work great. Both are Made in Germany. Harley shops should carry it.

That must have taken a ton of work, but well worth it.
