The Early C4 Analog Cluster
The "love your digi dash" made me go back and find the picture of the analog cluster that would have been in the early C4's had the LCD cluster failed the testing. It was produced along with the digital cluster and they decided on the digital. I am personally glad they did as this looks very boring to me compared to the colorful "futuristic" display we have in them now. They may look dated to some but like I mentioned in the other thread, this was designed in the late 70's and early 80's. Look at the interiors of cars from those era's. The digi dash was light years ahead in the information we get and just general appearance for it's time
I decided to post this as a poll. Are you happy with the digi-dash. Or do you think this analog cluster would have been the better option.

The digital dash is a real period piece that brings back the whole aura of the 80's and I really do appreciate that. It's one of the reasons I love my 88. But realistically, in a sports cars especially, there's nothing much better than a good old-fashioned analog cluster!

My biggest belief of the reason they went with the digital was to circumvent the "85 MPH" push the government was on. I doubt that would have been the "final" version. We would have been stuck with an 85mph cluster. They did that on the digital with the "bars"... but we all know that it keeps on going after 85
Other GM digital readouts would just start flashing at 85 That would have pissed me off.

So when I saw three digits on my digital display it wasn't an error?

I love the digital "star wars" dash in the early C4's. The car mags bashed it back in the day so GM changed it. To me it's alot like heads up displays in the newer Vettes. Easy to see your MPH and RPM's at a glance.

Since I just got to replace my Digi-dash cluster with a re-manfactured one I am sorry I didn't have the analog...hopefully analog guages wouldn't "sunburn" and become unreadiable.
Rant now over, I do like both the look and the functionality of the digi cluster...just didn't like buying a replacement!

I am one of the analog preferrers (is that a word?)
Anyway, had they done analog in the first place, I bet the 92-96 models would likely have had a very readable update instead of the "OK" compromise which I live with in my '93.

I think analog would have been better....but not those analog gauges. They just don't fit the car, and are obviously a thrown-together backup plan in case the digital stuff didn't work out.

While I can appreciate what they did with the digital cluster with respect to the times, I wish they would have gone analog...just not the one pictured. I'm sure they could have done better with the analog if they spent a more decent amount of time designing it, rather than that thrown-together back-up shown above.
Since my '89 will eventually be a track car, I will probably be going to an analog set up anyhow (and my digidash isn't working right now, anyway ).
